Late Hollywood actor Chadwick Boseman narrowly missed out on an Oscar for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, after Anthony Hopkins stole the show with his portrayal in The Father. But the controversial vote received a mixed reaction, with comedian Jo Brand admitting she was “really disappointed” in the outcome.
I feel really disappointed in a way
Discussing the 93rd Academy Awards as they played out, Jo revealed her true feelings to Alex Zane, Terri White, Sarah-Jane Crawford and Anna Richardson, admitting she wasn’t content with the results of the final announcement of the night, as many believed Chadwick should have won.
“I think he was robbed,” Jo told the panel.
She shrugged as she continued: “I feel really disappointed in a way, but here we go.”
After a brief chat about Best Actress winner Frances McDormand in Nomadland – which took home three Oscars in total on the night including Best Picture and Best Director for Chloe Zhao – she added cheekily: “Anthony Hopkins is coming after me now.
“I’ll have to go and poo in bucket,” referring to a specific part in the movie where Frances’ character experiences going to the toilet outside.
Jo wasn’t alone with her views, as fans took to social media to share their own opinions after watching the “chaotic” ending of the ceremony unravel.
Taking to Twitter, one snapped: “They build the entire show around a Chadwick Boseman ending and then Anthony Hopkins won and didn’t show up.”
“Chadwick Boseman will remain one of the greatest actors of all time, with or without that Oscar,” a second paid tribute.
A third added: “Damn Oscar or not, Chadwick Boseman will ALWAYS be one of the BEST actors and humans of our generation. He has set a legacy that cannot be competed with.”
“Chadwick Boseman deserved that Oscar,” retorted a fourth.
Another said: “The Oscars were so sure that Chadwick Boseman was going to win that they REARRANGED THE ENTIRE CEREMONY so his category could be last, and then they gave the award to Anthony Hopkins instead…the most chaotic and unhinged thing I’ve ever seen.”
“An absent Anthony Hopkins winning over Chadwick Boseman during a ceremony built to end around a Boseman win while Joaquin Phoenix awkwardly stumbles through it all is…wow. Chaos!” someone else agreed.
Others raged at the Academy for allowing it to happen, snapping: “Now why the hell would you nominate Chadwick Boseman, a man who gave the most incredible performances in his short career, and not give the award to him???? That was a perfect opportunity to honor him and all that he has done and you completed wasted it. F**k the academy,” they wrote.
Other nominees in that category included Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Gary Oldman in Mank and Steven Yuen for Minari.
