Happy Birthday Nellie! Monty Don shares sweet Twitter post in honour of beloved pet dog

The 66-year-old TV presenter, writer and gardener posted an up close image of his Golden Retriever, in honour of her turning six. Nellie the Golden Retriever is often seen on episodes during the long-running BBC2 show alongside fellow canine Patti the Yorkshire Terrier.

Monty Don has over 239,000 followers on Twitter, and fans quickly left messages to the celebrity dog, which soon trended on the social media website.

The post has been liked over 3,000 times on Twitter with hundreds of pet lovers and gardening enthusiats sharing pictures of their own dogs who recently celebrated their big days.

One person said: “Happy birthday Nell. I think you are looking more and more like Nigel.We love seeing you and Patti on G W.”

Another Tweet reads: “Aww Happy Birthday Nellie! Hope you get lots of tennis balls and treats xxxx.”

One follower commented: “Happy birthday Nell. Have a wonderful day in the garden.”

While a follower simply put: “Happy birthday you beautiful dog, man’s best friend.”

While Monty Don’s dog duo are familiar faces to TV viewers, the broadcaster has owned many dogs throughout his adult life, many of whom are not featured on the show.

The gardening expert was on hand to host yet another episode of Gardeners’ World alongside his four-legged family members on hand to help out.

There is even a pet cemetery dedicated to the dearly departed pups in the coppice at Longmeadow, holding the graves of Beaufort, Red, Poppy and Barry.

Monty Don has hosted the BBC2 show since 2003 after taking over the presenting role from celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

In June 2020 Prospect magazine declared Don “the nation’s gardener”.
