Legendary actress Helen Mirren, 76, was pictured for the first time after her transformation into wartime Prime Minister, Golda Meir, for her latest role. Helen will star as the famous leader in Guy Nattiv’s upcoming biopic Golda, which recently began shooting in London.

The icon was seen on set alongside French actress Camille Cottin, who is most famous in the UK for portraying Andréa Martel in Call My Agent.

In the pictures, Helen wore her hair, which was dyed dark with streaks of grey running through it, in a messy bun.

She donned a loose-fitting, plain grey shirt with a black puffa jacket and was seen taking a drag of a cigarette.

Meanwhile, Camille, whose hair was dark and slicked back, sported a polka dot white shirt with a smart black jacket.

Golda is set during the Yom Kippur War (1973), when Egypt, Syria and Jordan launched a coordinated attack on Israel to recover territory lost during the Six-Day War in 1967.

The film was written by Nicholas Martin, who is also responsible for the Meryl Streep hit Florence Foster Jenkins.

The story explores the weight of responsibility that Golda has to contend with, as well as the many controversial actions she chose to take whilst having to deal with infighting from her all-male cabinet.

Speaking about the ambitious role, Helen told The Radio Times: “Golda Meir was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader.”

“It is a great challenge to portray her at the most difficult moment of her extraordinary life.

“I only hope I do her justice!” she added.

Director Guy went on to praise Helen’s authentic and complex portrayal of the character.

Speaking about casting her in the role he said: “I have long been an admirer of the great Helen Mirren.

“She has melted so brilliantly into Golda Meir’s character with incredible talent, intelligence, depth and emotion, doing justice to the richness and complexity of this incredible woman.”

Camille is another high-profile star to join the cast and is set to play Lou Kaddar, Meir’s devoted personal assistant.

Minister of Defence Moshe Dayan will be portrayed by Rami Heuberger of Schindler’s List fame, and Chief of Staff David Elazar will be played by Lior Ashkenazi, who some might know from Entebbe.

Other famous faces in the cast include Call the Midwife’s Ben Caplan, The Pianist’s Ed Stoppard, Grantchester’s Emma Davies and Black Mirror’s Ellie Piercy.

It was announced back in July 2021 that Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures had obtained US rights to the film, in a deal negotiated by ICM Independent and CAA Media Finance.

The film is currently shooting for six weeks on location in both Israel and London.

Golda Meir was originally born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and served as the fourth prime minister of Israel.

The politician has been described as the “Iron Lady” of Israeli politics.
