Kate Garraway husband: Is Kate’s husband still in hospital? Is he still in coma?

GMB: Kate Garraway discusses ‘tough’ Christmas with Derek

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has had a heartbreaking year as her husband Derek Draper has been suffering with coronavirus Covid-19 since 2020. The much-loved television personality recently returned to screens after Christmas and gave an update on his condition.

Is Kate Garraway’s husband still in hospital?

As many will know, Garraway’s husband Draper first contracted Covid-19 in March 2020 and was hospitalised soon after.

The 53-year-old former political lobbyist and author was placed in intensive care.

Since then, he has remained in hospital after the disease left him with diabetes and damaged his heart and lungs.

He was then placed in a medically-induced coma and is currently in another form of coma called a PDOC (Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness).

In an interview with The Sun back in October 2020, she said how this left him mostly unresponsive.

However, he did speak his first word when nurses were attempting to move him, which was “pain.”

Garraway returned for her first show since Christmas on January 7 where she gave an update on how he was doing.

Her co-anchor Ben Shephard asked: “And how was Christmas in the end? Because we were all very concerned in the run-up.”

She replied: “It was tough, I mean, wasn’t it? You know?

“I think it is tough for everybody. I knew it was going to be tough.

“There was a lovely moment we did have, which was we did over the period get to see Derek and the children did.

“It is the first time they have been able to do that so that was amazing.

“It is, of course, very heightened with emotion because he is very changed.

“So all of those routines we normally do… It was one of those moments that was so wonderful but it amplified how sad everything was, does that make sense?”

“But it was still fantastic. I am very grateful to have had that opportunity.”

Garraway also revealed how it is now very difficult for her as she is not able to visit him at the moment.

This is because due to the new lockdown rules in England, meaning she cannot go into the hospital.

She continued: “And then instantly, now I am in a position where even I cannot visit.

“Because we are into lockdown and there are no visits at all.

“Which I hope does not continue for the whole of lockdown because I think that will be very impactful.”
