Katherine Ryan plans home birth after being in hospital for just 9 minutes for second baby

Katherine Ryan has shared that she is looking at having a home birth with her third child as she gives birth “quickly”.

The comedian, 39, shared how she nearly had her first child in the back of a mini-cab and is “very good at having babies quickly” after she nearly had her now 13 year old daughter before they got to the hospital.

The star is in a relationship with her childhood sweetheart Bobby Kootstra after the pair rekindled their relationship following 20 years apart and they are currently expecting their second child together.

The couple welcomed their son in 2021 when she said she and Kootstra booked into the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London where Kate Middleton and Princess Diana gave birth.

“We were only at the hospital nine minutes,” she told Jonathan Ross. “So I (think I) might as well have it at home.

“My husband’s not completely on board, he’s a little bit squeamish. I’ve told him, ‘I can talk you through it, it’s going to be fine’.”

Ryan added that she has a midwife and if it snows or someone gets stuck in traffic, she is “prepared”.

She added: “I’d love to be a midwife in a different life. I respect them so much, nurses, midwives.

“If I’m ever clever enough in my retirement, I want to be at the very least a doula.”

Katherine recently amused fans when she put her Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween, explaining that she doesn’t want to “mess” with them later when the baby is likely to arrive.

She said: “I did promise my husband I wouldn’t go too (over the top) this year and then he came out and saw what I’d done and he was not impressed.”

She added: “There is a bear on the roof.”

It comes after the comedian opened up on how she overcame the “shame” she felt when she found herself as a single mum to her eldest daughter Violet.

Katherine explained: “To do what I do, you have to be shameless, and when I came to this country, I was a very young single mother, very vulnerable, and was miles away from anyone who loved me.

"I did feel shame about that – the narrative was I was damaged goods.”

Speaking to Glamour, she added: “Everyone was like, 'why did he leave you?' And I was like, 'because I asked him to'. Soon I started feeling good about myself and enjoying the privilege that it was to have that time with my daughter and be a single mother to my daughter. It was then wonderful things started coming into my life.”

Katherine was born and raised in Canada and relocated to the UK in 2008, however it was a chance meeting on a work trip back in her home country that led her to current partner Bobby.

The couple had dated as teenagers but were reunited in 2018 when Katherine visited Ontario to film an episode of genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?.

The couple became civil partners in 2019 and welcomed their first child together in 2021.
