Meghan Markle, 40, raised eyebrows on her recent visit to New York where she bundled up in winter coats despite temperatures reaching 28 degrees. Lady Colin Campbell, 71, has claimed the Duchess’ decision to wear heavy winter attire was “no accident”, as the aristocrat labelled the supposedly commercialised move from the former working royal a “vulgar” stunt.

Speaking on her YouTube channel, Lady Colin said: “The New York visit where she has appeared in fall or winter clothes on a hot summers day, we have to ask ourselves, what is going on?

“There are far easier ways to hide a weight gain than bulking up and wearing a bulky winter coat on a boiling hot day.

“So we have to ask ourselves, why? and I have the answer.

“Meghan had an affiliation from her days on Suits and when she had the blog with a coat company.

“She would wear their coats even when she was a working member of the Royal Family.”

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant went on to allege that one of the “difficulties” Meghan faced back when she was a working Royal Family member was her “commercialisation” of the centuries-old institution.

She continued: “Her commercialisation of an institution that should not be commercialised for its participants’ personal gain.

“Meghan has worn those two coats that are manufactured by a certain company that she had and still has a financial affiliation with.

“Those coats were debuted, their winter line was launched when she wore those coats. It’s not an accident.

“Meghan has yet again shown us how completely vulgar, crass, common and quite frankly how ghastly she is,” she added.

Meghan appeared to have forgotten to check the weather forecast before her trip to New York, stepping out in four unseasonably warm coats.

The Duchess of Sussex joined her husband Prince Harry at the United Nations to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as they kicked off the last day of their New York City tour, which culminated in their appearance at Global Citizen Live on September 25.

She sported a £3080 tobacco-coloured cashmere Max Mara coat for the occasion, which she paired with wide-legged pants and stiletto court shoes.

The royal kept her hair swept back into a smooth bun, while Harry sported a classic black suit despite the New York humidity.

It was a pricey trip for Meghan, who sported a £4274.03 Loro Piana cashmere coat, matching £1231 wide-leg trousers, and red Manolo Blahnik pointed-toe pumps while visiting Harlem’s PS 123 Mahalia Jackson school on September 24, where 94 per cent of the pupils have free school meals.

The next day, she left The Carlyle hotel and headed to 50 United Nations Plaza dressed in another Max Mara coat, which she wore open but layered over a long-sleeve black turtleneck top. She added a £2447 Valextra bag to match.

It was a small outfit change from her trip with Prince Harry to One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial in the morning, where she wore the same long-sleeve top with a heavy black coat on top.

The Duchess of Sussex is living in a mansion in California, with Prince Harry and their two children Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Social media users were left baffled by Meghan’s wardrobe, with one writing: “Does she never learn how to wear clothes that suit the occasion and weather?

“It’s a hot and humid day in New York and she is wearing a high collar and coat.”
