Finally, a fan-created petition worth signing. Although, I’m actually a little shocked this even needed a petition, since this is clearly the most logical and obvious casting decision Hollywood could ever make. But someone went ahead and did it, and now People says that more than 20,000 people have signed it.
Back in November, Hugh Jackman confessed to Howard Stern that he was done playing Wolverine after playing the character in nine movies since 2000. Wolverine is a Marvel character, and Marvel is owned by Disney, and you know that if there’s a dollar to be squeezed out of a wallet, Disney isn’t going to let any character die. So we should expect that Wolverine will make an appearance in the 400th X-Men related movie, or Frozen 4. And if thousands of strangers on the internet get their way, Danny DeVito will be the man hired to wear those claws.
It all comes courtesy of a Change.org petition, which as we all know is basically the internet’s version of the piece of scrap paper you signed in high school to get a new soda vending machine, but I can appreciate the effort. According to the petition, its goal is as follows:
“The only man able to take the throne after Hugh Jackman. We believe that if Wolverine is to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the only man able to pull it off is Danny DeVito.”
They’re very close to reaching their goal of 25,000. Currently it’s hovering around the 23,700 mark. And if they make it to 25,000, who knows what will happen? Probably nothing.
This petition was probably created with equal parts love and sarcasm, but I don’t think it’s that crazy an idea. Danny DeVito has played a comic book character before (Batman Returns). He also shares a lot of the same characteristics with Wolverine. Sorry, I should say – a wolverine. They’re both short, stocky, scrappy, hairy, and scavenge for their food. Wait, I might have just described Frank Reynolds.
Danny DeVito hasn’t responded to the petition. He might not even want to do it. He’s 74. Plus, I don’t think these fans know what they’re getting themselves into. It’s a real “be careful what you wish for” situation. Wolverine is from Canada, so they’ll be the first ones complaining when Danny DeVito’s Wolverine opens his mouth and a thick New Jersey accent comes out.
