Sarah Paulson admits that while she loves the ‘fandom’ surrounding her relationship with Holland Taylor, she’s also been subjected to ‘cruel’ messages from trolls.
The Ratched actress began dating the Two and a Half Men star five years ago and they’re still going strong.
However, their relationship has been shrouded in scrutiny over the 32-year age gap – Sarah is 45 while Holland 77.
Addressing the commentary on her dating life, Sarah told The Guardian that she doesn’t remember ‘people going nuts’ about the age difference between Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, which is 25 years.
The American Horror Story actress continued: ‘For me, that seems to be the predominant interest in my relationship with Holland, what would be perceived by some as the strangeness of it, or the unlikelihood of it. I think people are fascinated by it, because it’s so not typical.
‘Except for if you look around at plenty of well-known or recognisable couples, when they’re heterosexual couples, it just runs rampant, and I don’t see anybody becoming obsessed by those relationships.’
While she struggles to understand the particular fascination, Sarah admitted she is warmed by the ‘fandom and excitement’ her relationship attracts if it promotes ‘more freedom’ in regards to the way ‘people think about what’s possible for them’.
She added: ‘What I don’t love, which is sort of a consequence of it being such public knowledge, is that there is discussion about it at all.
‘Believe me, there have been plenty of young people on the internet who have tweeted horrifying things to me about it, and who don’t support it and who are so cruel…
‘So it’s just a bit of a dance. But one I try to not let into my brain too often.’
Sarah went on to confirm that she does live with Holland, and has done so for their entire relationship, but both actresses still have their own properties so they can spend time alone occasionally.
Like many other couples, the Bird Box actress revealed that spending so much time together during lockdown made her and Holland realise the value of having their own space.
Sarah is currently starring in Netflix series Ratched, created by Ryan Murphy, and is winning rave reviews for her performance as the menacing nurse.
