The Little Mermaid’s Samuel E. Wright dies: Voice of Sebastian who sang Disney favorite Under The Sea passes away at 74

  • Officials from Montgomery, New York announced sad news on Facebook 
  • He sang two of the 1989 film’s tracks in Kiss the Girl and Under the Sea 
  • Wright had worked with Disney on subsequent Little Mermaid projects 
  • He also had an impressive slate of credits on TV and on Broadway  

Samuel E. Wright, the voice actor who played Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, has died at 74.

‘Sam was an inspiration to us all and along with his family established the Hudson Valley Conservator,’ officials from his hometown of Montgomery, New York said on the town’s Facebook page. (It was not immediately clear what his cause of death was.)

‘On top of his passion for the arts and his love for his family, Sam was most known for walking into a room and simply providing PURE JOY to those he interacted with. He loved to entertain, he loved to make people smile and laugh and he loved to love,’ the statement read.

Wright famously provided the vocals for two of the 1989 film’s tracks, Kiss the Girl and Under the Sea, which went on to win the Academy Award for Original Song.

He had also participated in Disney endeavors including The Little Mermaid sequels and TV adaptation, as well as the 2000 film Dinosaur.

The veteran entertainer had also performed as an actor on TV and film, with parts on Law & Order, Simon & Simon, The Cosby Show, All My Children, Enos and Ball Four.

Wright had amassed a number of credits for his work in Broadway musicals such as Pippin, which he replaced Ben Vereen in the lead role; The Lion King, in which he played Mufasa; and productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Welcome to the Club, Mule Bone, The Tap Dance Kid and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, according to Broadway World.

On Twitter, a number of fans of the talented actor chimed in with condolences.

One wrote, ‘Mr. Samuel E. Wright, Thank You For Your Beautiful Energy, Talent, Light and Wisdom That Gratefully Will Continue To Bless Us ALL Forever. May You Rest In Peace…..’

Another said, ‘Thank you for showing us that life is the bubbles under the sea. We will dearly miss you, Sam.’

One fan called Wright ‘the amazing voice [so] many of us remember from our youth…’ adding, ‘Truly saddened.’
