Britney Spears hinted at internal battle with biggest hits amid conservatorship battle – from Lucky to Overprotected

AFTERyears of being under her father Jamie Spears' conservatorship, Britney Spears might be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as he recently has agreed to step down.

Although Britney has now opened up about the restrictions she's been under for years, she seemingly hinted at her internal battle in her most popular songs – even if she didn't write them herself.

LUCKY

One of the first songs that showed just how Britney felt inside was her 2000's hit, Lucky.

In the song, Britney is a young star who has money, attention, and all of the clothes she desires – but she still feels hollow inside.

Lyrics: "She's so lucky, she's a star / But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking / If there's nothing missing in my life / Then why do these tears come at night?"

STRONGER

That same year, Britney also came out with her hit Stronger – a response to Baby One More Time.

In the video, Britney discovers that her partner is cheating on her and she, of course, breaks out in an empowering anthem.

This was meant to be one of the songs that took her from child star to blonde bombshell.

Lyrics: "There's nothing you can do or say, baby / I've had enough / I'm not your property as from today, baby / You might think that I won't make it on my own / But now I'm Stronger than yesterday."

OVERPROTECTED

In 2001, Britney released Overprotected and this is the biggest case of foreshadowing in her songs.

In the video, Britney dances with a few pals, and in one part, she finds herself surrounded by pap pictures of herself.

When she released this song, she said that she related to it "on a personal basis, because I feel kind of overprotected.

"When I want to go out, everything has to be organized in advance."

Lyrics: "I'll tell 'em what I like, what I want, and what I don't / But every time I do, I stand corrected / Things that I've been told / I can't believe what I hear about the world / I realize I'm overprotected."

CINDERELLA

In her 2001 Britney album, she released the song Cinderella, which never had the chance to become a single.

Although this song is about a controlling relationship – and it's often speculated that it's about Justin Timberlake – it can also be interpreted as her speaking out against her controlling career.

Lyrics: " From time to time, I tried to tell just what was on my mind / You'd tell me, "Not today"/ "Come back, do that" / "Where's Cinderella at?" / Was all you had to say / Here I am, so try to forgive me / I don't believe in fairytales

"Here we are with nothing but honesty / I've had enough, I'm not gonna stay / I'm sorry for running away like this / And I'm sorry, I've already made my wish / But Cinderella's got to go / I'm sorry, just trying to live my life."

EVERYTIME

By 2003, Britney came out with this gem of a song that will raise the hairs on anyone's neck.

Everytime is Britney's plead for forgiveness to a partner that she had hurt – and again, fans thought it was about Justin Timberlake.

During their messy breakup, Britney had been portrayed as the bad guy, but this song gave an insight into what was really going on behind closed doors.

The music video is also very touching, presenting fans with the possibility of Britney's death after such a tough relationship.

Lyrics: "Every time I try to fly I fall / Without my wings / I feel so small."

MY PREROGATIVE

Britney turned the tables on her haters with this 2004 rendition of Bobby Brown's My Prerogative, where she is now taking charge of her life.

In 2004, she had decided to marry Kevin Federline, who used to be her backup dancer.

In the video, Britney turned up the sexy factor as she danced on top of a bed while in white lingerie – and even went as far as recreating her wedding to Kevin.

Lyrics: "Everybody's talking all this stuff about me / Why don't they just let me live? / (Tell me why) I don't need permission, make my own decisions / That's my prerogative."

MONA LISA

Britney kept up her rebellious streak by releasing the song Mona Lisa in 2004.

In the hit, she admits to her mistakes and says that people are simply waiting for her to mess up to further kick her down.

Lyrics: "She's the original / She's unforgettable / She wanted you to know / She's been cloned / It's kind of incredible / She's so unpredictable / She wanted you to know / That she's home, that she's home."

CIRCUS

Another song that hinted at her life being a performance was her 2008 hit, Circus.

At this point, Britney's conservatorship had just begun and she was adjusting to having others control of her life.

This song could have been interpreted as Britney telling fans she still had total authority – but sadly, that was not the truth.

Lyrics: "Spotlight on me and I'm ready to break."

ALIEN

In her penultimate album, which was released back in 2013, Britney released the song Alien.

If you really want to get inside Britney's brain, this is the song to listen to.

It's about her simply feeling isolated, lonely, and in need of comfort.

Lyrics: "There was a time I was one of a kind / Lost in the world, out of me, myself and I / Was lonely then, like an alien / I tried but I never figured it out / Why I always felt like a stranger in a crowd."
