I'm a microwave popcorn fanatic – add some of these treats to give it a punch | The Sun

IF you get bored of the usual buttery toppings on popcorn, there are ways to make your popped kernels a little more exciting.

A microwave fanatic says they have discovered some toppings and pantry items that you can shake on top of a fresh bowl of popcorn to give it a punch.

There are apparently a whole selection of toppings you can use as "add-ins" to spice up your popcorn, according to tips from a microwave popcorn fan published on the website Mashed.

"If you've just been adding butter to your popcorn, or even settling for the butter flavor that you get from a microwave bag, then you may be missing out," writes popcorn fan Holly Riddle.

"While everyone loves a bowl of buttery, hot, movie theater-style popcorn on occasion, if you eat popcorn on the regular, even butter can get boring," she said.

According to Riddle, these food tricks can be added to popcorn whether you make it in the microwave or on the stove top.

If you are the kind of person that likes your popcorn to have a sweeter flavor profile, you're in luck.

Riddle suggests some interesting toppings like matcha powder and dark chocolate.

She even thinks farther outside of the box beyond spices and powders.

If you add white chocolate and crushed up Oreos, she says your movie time stack will taste like its been "drizzled" with a Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme candy bar.

There are even more options for sweet popcorn, including a recipe that incorporates peanut butter, honey, vanilla, and peanuts blended together.

Riddle describes it as "a totally tasty treat that's incredibly easy to make."

One tip for limiting the mess that tends to accompany gooey, sticky ingredients, like peanut butter and honey, is to spread the popcorn on a baking sheet, put on the toppings cold, and then pop everything into the oven.

If you want something a little more holiday feeling, a mix of cocoa powder and powdered sugar will make your crunchy kernels taste like hot chocolate.

The popcorn fanatic does have some more savory suggestions for spicing up your popcorn.

One tasty option for giving things a little more flavor is to mix in some curry powder.
