Asda has updated its shopping rules in line with government coronavirus restrictions. The retailer has introduced apps to help customers shop more easily.

How does it work?

The latest technology is currently being trialled in 50 Asda stores in the UK.

The app works in conjunction with automatic counting technology that has been installed in more than 100 stores.

Many branches have limits on how many customers can enter at one time to ensure social distancing is maintained.

Shoppers can sign up for the new queuing app when there is a queue to get into their local branch.

It allows them to check into a virtual queue and they will be notified when they can go into the stores.

The app would mean Britons can wait from the comfort of their cars, which could be useful in the colder winter months.

Chief executive Roger Burnley said: “Providing a safe environment for our customers and colleagues to shop and work has been our priority throughout the pandemic and we are stepping up the measures we have in store to provide additional protection.

“We would ask customers to play their part by respecting social distancing and shopping responsibly when they visit our stores.”

If the trial is successful, the app could be rolled out to ASDA branches across the country.

This is one of many safety measures put in place by the supermarket giant.

Sanitising stations are available at the entrance of stores so shoppers can clean trolleys and baskets.

Floor markings are also in place throughout branches to remind customers to keep a safe distance.

Another app has also been introduced this year to minimise customer contact.

The ‘Scan & Go’ app allows shoppers to scan food items while they shop.

This totals the groceries up while going around and shoppers can pay on the app.

A statement from Asda said: “All you have to do is scan and bag the items as you shop, using the handset provided, or the Scan & Go Mobile app and breeze through the dedicated card checkouts.

“There’s no need to unpack your trolley and with dedicated card checkouts – you only need to pay and you’re done.

“With ‘Scan & Go’ you can pack your items as you shop, meaning there is no packing palaver at the checkout.

“You don’t have to be a techno wiz to use ‘Scan & Go’. Our easy-to-use handset and mobile app let you scan in an instant and tap to delete.”
