I gave up my manager job after realising I was making more from side hustle that I started in my kitchen | The Sun

A WOMAN has told how she gave up her manager job after raking in more from her side hustle.

Sarah Rutherford, from Grimsby, started her wax melt company from the comfort of her kitchen.

Although it started as a hobby, the budding entrepreneur decided to take her it to the next level and pour all her energy into The Rose River.

The business began back in 2017 when Sarah was working as a retail manager in Grimsby Docks.

Ms Rutherford started selling candles on Facebook but the business grew when she decided to specialise in scented wax melts.

She told Grimsby Live: "I did want to specialise in candles at first – I was mad on them – but then someone asked me to do wax melts. No one was doing them at the time."

The successful business owner has now opened her first shop in Littlefield Lane.

"It's a bit overwhelming to be opening the shop. When the sign went up I cried, because I just stopped and thought, 'Oh my god, I've actually done it'," she added.

Sarah, who worked in retail for 11 years, decided to quit her 9 to 5 job after she started making more cash from her small business.

She explained: "Once I left my retail job I just went full-time because we were that busy so I just thought, 'I'll go for it', and I haven't looked back."

Her products grew in popularity with thousands of customers buying the scented melts.

In less than four years she has gained more than 5,000 followers on her business social media account.

She now stocks more than 200 scents of wax melts made from natural ingredients – including toilet and carpet fresheners, car diffusers and a candle bar which can get rid of the fish smell.

However, her rise to the top wasn't easy.

Sarah's husband, Troy Rutherford, had to work extra hours to support her passion.

Troy said: "I'm a taxi driver so if you need more money, you just work more hours.

"So it was always there and I said to her, 'If you don't give it a go you'll never know', and I can just do more work if I need to."

Sarah now has customers swearing by her wax melts and has created a successful website where they can order the products.
