A woman was stunned when she got home from the airport and discovered that the $3,000 worth of gifts she’d purchased in Europe were missing from her suitcase — and in their place was dog food.

Gina Sheldon, an attorney from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was happy to have her Christmas shopping taken care of as she returned home from a trip overseas.

She had spent 11 days traveling across Italy, and along the way, she purchased presents to give to her family for the holidays – including a leather jacket, wristlet purses, and more.

But when she returned home and opened up her suitcase, she discovered that all of the pricey presents she bought on her trip were gone, and instead, they had been replaced with piles upon piles of dog food, as well as a few dirty old T-shirts and a bottle of shaving cream.

Shocking: But when she opened up her suitcase after returning home, she discovered that all of the pricey presents she had purchased on her trip were gone

Gina estimated that she spent more than $3,000 on the gifts, which were all somehow stolen from her suitcase while it was in transit.

On the way back from Italy, Gina made a stop in Paris, and she believes that the items were switched out in the baggage area at the Charles DeGaulle Airport in France.

Gina told NBC Boston that her first through was that she had accidentally taken someone else’s bag.

But after she realized it was, in fact, her suitcase, she wondered: ‘How could this happen?’

She added to ABC affiliate WMUR, ‘I think the reason they did that is because when it goes through the scan and it continued on its journey, it looks like a real luggage product.’

Her flight was booked through Delta Airlines but operated by Air France. Gina told NBC Boston that she spent hours trying to get through to them but wasn’t able to resolve the issue.

However, Delta later told the outlet in a statement that they were working with Gina to ‘find a resolution.’

They said: ‘We apologize for this customer’s experience following Air France flight 334.

‘We have affirmatively connected with our partners at Air France and the customer to find a resolution.’

Despite losing thousands of dollars worth of stuff, Gina is keeping a positive mindset about the deacle.

‘I went to a friend’s house for a holiday party and I had all these different gifts to give them, and instead I walked in with a bottle of champagne and a good story,’ she said
