Chelsea next manager odds: Allegri favourite to replace Lampard after Arsenal defeat, Benitez and Terry in contention

MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI is the stand-out favourite to be appointed Chelsea's next permanent manager, according to the bookies.

Frank Lampard's position is under increasing scrutiny after Boxing Day's 3-1 loss to Arsenal, who hadn't registered a top-flight victory since November 1.

It was Chelsea's third defeat in four Premier League fixtures and left the Club in seventh position – six points behind leaders Liverpool.

Bookmakers Coral have responded by creating a 'next manager' market with former Juventus boss Allegri the current favourite at 13/8.

The six-time Serie A winner remains a free agent having left Turin in May.

He's been linked with various European heavyweights including Arsenal, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain over the past several months.

Thomas Tuchel is a distant second in the betting at 3/1.

The German tactician was relieved of his duties at PSG earlier this week – hours after guiding them to a 4-0 victory over Strasbourg.

Tuchel became the Ligue 1 champions' boss in June 2018, winning two league titles, the French Cup and French League Cup.

Another of PSG's former managers in Laurent Blanc, who is currently chief at Qatari club Al-Rayyan, is priced at 9/1.

Rafa Benitez and Wolves' Nuno Espirito Santo are both locked at 12s with Stamford Bridge legend John Terry the 16/1 outsider.

Coral’s John Hill said: "Defeat to Arsenal puts more pressure on Frank Lampard’s shoulders.

"With Massimiliano Allegri still out of work, we make the former Juventus boss the favourite to be the next Chelsea manager."

Lampard, 42, helped Chelsea to a fourth-placed finish in his debut campaign and started the season brightly.

But former Blues midfielder Craig Burley insists that he's on the 'chopping block' if results don't improve.

Burley told ESPN: "They have gone from looking one of the paciest, quickest sides in the Premier League, to one of the most pedestrian.

"That is a huge issue for him because you may have noticed with this owner Roman Abramovich, he doesn't suffer inconsistency, bad results, no matter who it is.

"So let me be clear, Frank Lampard is back on the chopping board currently as we speak."
