Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3: UFC 264 show piece fight predicted by UFC and MMA stars ahead of Vegas showdown

CONOR MCGREGOR is just days away from his crunch trilogy fight with fan favourite Dustin Poirier.

The Notorious will renew his rivalry with the American early on Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 264 in Las Vegas.

McGregor, 32, suffered a brutal second-round KO loss to the American in their January rematch in Abu Dhabi.

The UFC's poster boy was guilty of adopting a boxing-heavy approach for his second encounter with the former interim lightweight champion, who brutalised his legs with nasty calf kicks.

Ireland's first UFC champion insists he's learned from the mistakes he made that fateful night in Abu Dhabi.

The MMA world is divided over the outcome of Sunday's Sin City series decider, with solid arguments being made for both men having their hands raised.

With that in mind, SunSport thought it'd only be right to get some pre-fight predictions for Poirier vs McGregor III from some of the biggest names in the sport.

Michael Bisping

The Count said: "I think Conor is going to show up. I think we're going to see a good version of Conor, I believe. Yeah, he's made loads of money, that's well documented.

"But you can't buy respect and you can't buy the lightweight championship of the world. And we know these are things Conor holds close to his heart.

"It's like, 'What do you buy the man that's got everything?' You can't buy that. The only way you can do that is earn that. And it means so much to him.

"So I feel that he is going to come a very good version of himself. It's a tough one, though. Dustin Poirier just knocked him out cold.

"Yes, Conor knocked him out, but that was a long time ago and Dustin got to have a lot of fights in between.

"I respect Conor for doing this. To come back and fight a man that's just put you to sleep the fight before and not get a tune-up fight or get rid of that gun shyness or whatever that may be.

"That's incredibly difficult. So I've got to say, respect to Conor. I think Dustin is the bigger guy, if I'm honest. He's the bigger guy, he hits hard.

"I don't know how this one is going to go. It could either way. Conor could go out there and smoke him in the first round. He may do.

"But if it gets out of the first round, as always with Conor, he starts to slow down and starts to wilt a little bit.

"He's a sprinter, he's a 100m sprinter. And in that first round, he's unreal, he's one of the best. But he does slow down.

"I don't know [how it's going to go]. It could go either way."

Cris Cyborg

The Bellator women's featherweight champion said: "The first fight, the guy, Dustin Poirier, was very good.

"But if McGregor is training really hard, I think he can win. But I don't know. I think it'll be a good fight."

Anthony Johnson

Rumble said: "Dustin will win. I still think Dustin will win. Conor showed another side of himself in that fight.

'I don't know if it was the ring rust or he just didn't have that mean streak in him.

"I think Dustin saw that and I think Dustin knows that this time that Conor is going to try and come back and fight even harder.

"So Dustin is going to elevate too. I just give it to Dustin. I just give it to Dustin. I think he possesses more tools."

Official prediction: Dustin Poirier

Ryan Bader

The Bellator heavyweight champion said: "It's a tough one.

"For some reason, I have it in my head that Conor wins this one, makes adjustments and comes back.

"Dustin is tough as they come and he looked great in his last fight. But I think Conor, he has that fire and he definitely wants to get that one back and makes those adjustments and goes there and gets the win."

Sodiq Yusuff

Super said: "I picked Poirier to win the second fight. I was telling my team-mates that I knew he was going to calf kick him and would be able to deal with him that way.

"So the third fight, now that Conor is aware of what that is [he'll adapt]. The reason why I thought Poirier was going to beat him like that was because of how much boxing Conor was doing. It made logical sense.

"I've had a similar opponent like that in the past that was primarily a boxer and that was kind of the way I was going to fight him. `

"I like a lot of things that Poirier does. I do a lot of similar things to Poirier so I thought he was going to beat him like that.

"But this next fight when Conor knows what he's going to do, it's going to be a little bit of a harder challenge for Poirier.

"This time, it's a little bit more in the air. I was pretty confident in Poirier winning the second fight, but not the third."

Jack Shore

The Welsh bantamweight said: "It's a tough one. It's easy to say that if he can avoid the leg kick he'll do fine. But it was ultimately Poirier's hands that put him away last time.

"I know the leg kick neutralised him, but it was ultimately his boxing that closed the show.

"I think it'll be a little bit closer, a little bit longer this time. I don't think it'll finish as early.

"But I don't know. I'll go with Poirier just because of how good he looked in the last fight and how active's he's been compared to Conor over the last couple of years.

"But obviously, Conor's got that bazooka in his left hand and it only takes that to land clean and it's lights out for anyone."

Official prediction: Dustin Poirier

Muhammad Mokaev

The Punisher said: "If McGregor fights [his] old style, not like boxing – heavy-footed.

"More like when he was a karate background. If he does this style, he'll batter Poirier."
