Tips for Players Championship

Hot tip: Jon Rahm, 16-1

The world No 2 hasn’t exactly been tearing up trees so far this season – his best finish was a share of fifth at the Genesis – but he hasn’t been too far off either, with two other top tens in five starts.

He looked the likely winner the last time the Players ran its full course in 2019, after a third round 64 catapulted him into the lead.

A closing 76 dropped him into 12th place, but the Spaniard is a better player now, and he will have learned from that experience.

Mid price: Hideki Matsuyama, 30-1

How many people remember he equalled the course record with a nine under par 63 on day one last year, before the PGA Tour suddenly realised how serious coronavirus was, and pulled the plug?

That was not the first time Matsuyama has shown a liking for Sawgrass. He finished tied eighth in 2019, shooting rounds of 66-67 over the weekend.

That was his second top ten here, and his game is well suited to tracks that reward accuracy

Long shot: Andrew Putnam, 175-1

The man from Tacoma seems to have slipped under the radar coming into this event despite finishing in the top five in each of his last two starts, and this is another course where the short hitters can compete with the bombers.

Displayed a sound temperament at Bay Hill, and he had already shown signs of running into form with a share of seventh in Phoenix. This is a big step up from his only win – the 2018 Barracuda – but looks a decent each way shot.
