Follow the latest updates live from the Portuguese Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton attempts to break Michael Schumacher’s record number of wins in the first ever race at the Algarve International Circuit.
F1 returns to Portugal in Portimao for the second of four unfamiliar circuits, with Hamilton looking to continue his relentless charge towards a seventh world championship this season. Another victory today will put him three race wins clear of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, and will also see him pass Schumacher’s all-time record with his 92nd career win.
Hamilton starts from pole position ahead of Bottas and Max Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc once again outperforming the Ferrari to break into the top four ahead of Sergio Perez and Alex Albon. Follow the live updates below.
Ricciardo is the first man to pit, making an obvious switch to the two-stop strategy. Will anyone else follow?
Right, so where are the battles. Verstappen is taking the fight to the front two, but he reports that his front left is “dead” and wants to pit as he is losing a boat-load of time. Hamilton also says his tyres are struggling, and a two-stop looking more likely here. Leclerc is only 4.7s behind Verstappen and is going along quite nicely, while Gasly is catching Sainz gfor fifth after getting past Norris.

Turn 1 is proving the place to overtake, and with the rain gone and clouds clearing the order is starting to sort itself out.
Hamilton repeats the move on Sainz that Bottas completed just one lap earlier, and Verstappen has quickly caught the McLaren too. Regardless of the inevitable happening, fourth and fifth will be music to the ears for McLaren.
LEAD CHANGE! Bottas gets a run on Sainz and those medium tyres are beginning to work, with Bottas flying past and re-raking the lead into Turn One. Hamilton is right with them, while Verstappen clears Norris to take fourth and immediately sets the fastest lap of the race by TWO SECONDS! Where did that come from?
Sainz is 1.4s to the good in first and is out of DRS range of Bottas, who doesn’t have that comfort with Hamilton as his Mercedes teammate begins to fight back. Verstappen appears to have avoided any significant damage in that collision with Perez – who is still running in last after pitting – but he is under investigation from the stewards.
Sainz takes the lead! I repeat, Carlos Sainz leads the Portuguese Grand Prix! He gets an excellent drive out of Turn 5 and passes Bottas to hit the front.
It’s raining! It’s chaos on the opening lap! Bottas loses second to Verstappen, but the Red Bull driver goes wide at Turn Two and that gives Bottas the place back. Verstappen then collides with Perez and takes the Racing Point out through Turn Four. Hamilton is in trouble too as he hits the rain first, and Bottas takes the lead!
Sainz is flying too, and the McLaren takes second from Hamilton!
The Portuguese Grand Prix is under way!
