Good Morning Britain viewers saw a dramatic change in the presenting line-up earlier this year. Piers Morgan famously quit his role on the ITV morning news show back in March. Ever since his shock exit from the show, Piers’ former co-host Susanna Reid has presented the show alongside a range of stand-in stars. Richard Bacon has now revealed he’ll be stepping into the role next week, but viewers are divided on whether or not he’ll be a good fit for the show.
Richard will be co-hosting Good Morning Britain next week, but he’s no stranger to the ITV programme having appeared on it in the past.
The broadcaster previously stood in for Piers on the ITV breakfast news show for a short stint two years ago.
He’s also got lots of experience with early morning TV, having hosted Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast between 1999 and 2002.
Richard shared the news that he’d be making a return to Good Morning Britain in a recent interview.
Richard explained: “Not only am I coming home to London to guest present Good Morning Britain this month, but being back on British breakfast broadcasting feels like coming home also.”
He’s set to host the show alongside Charlotte Hawkins next Wednesday, Kate Garraway on Thursday and Friday, and finally Ranvir Singh on Monday, August 23.
Good Morning Britain regular Susanna Reid is also currently having presenters stand in for her on the show while she enjoys her summer break.
“I can’t wait to see the team again and am very much looking forward to my time on the show with Kate, Ranvir and Charlotte,” Richard told The Mirror.
Upon hearing the news, fans quickly took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Richard taking on the presenting job.
Some weren’t too pleased with the choice, with many claiming he’d be no match for Piers.
One viewer commented: “Clutching at straws, GMB…”
“@GMB are you b****y sure Richard Bacon talk about getting to the bottom of the barrel,” a second harshly remarked.
Another tweeted: “My goodness u guys really are desperate now!!! It will be Katie Hopkins next!!!” (sic)
However, others were positive about the ITV show hiring Richard for the role.
One posted: “I will watch @GMB regularly again as soon as Richard Bacon takes over. He is the opposite of Piers Morgan and one of the best tv presenters around today. @richardpbacon.”
“Good choice – looking forward to this @richardpbacon,” another added.
“Best news. Wondered how long it would take for GMB to realise @richardpbacon needed to come back,” a third remarked.
Piers’ exit from Good Morning Britain came after a row with weatherman Alex Beresford earlier this year.
The co-stars had a disagreement over comments Piers made about Meghan Markle and the host refused to apologise following a backlash.
Since Piers left the show a number of different presenters have stood in as Susanna’s co-host.
Ben Shephard, Bill Turnbull, Richard Madeley and Alastair Campbell are some of the big names who have filled in for the former GMB star.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
