Charlie Murphy is a popular actress who is still remembered by The Last Kingdom fans as playing Uhtred’s (played by Alexander Dreymon) lover Iseult. Many people had frowned on their relationship, as Uhtred was already married to Mildrith (Amy Wren), but they changed their minds about Iseult as she had the power to save Alfred’s (David Dawson) son from an illness. Murphy has since spoken about her time on the series, and Express.co.uk has all you need to know about how she felt.
How did The Last Kingdom star Charlie Murphy feel about leaving as Iseult?
Although Iseult was only a supporting character in The Last Kingdom, she remains to this day a fan-favourite, as fans fell in love with her personality.
She was known to be a sorceress, who had been married to a much older Peredur (Paul Ritter) when Uhtred met her.
Uhtred ended up freeing her from Peredur and they became close, and he ended up taking her back with him to his own wife, Mildrith.
Iseult, who could see the future, told Mildrith she and Uhtred were on different paths – later, Uhtred and Mildrith broke up.
With Mildrith gone, Uhtred and Iseult were able to continue their relationship, and Iseult ended up helping Uhtred on his mission to support King Alfred.
She helped Alfred when he was sick, and she also helped heal his young son, Edward, saving his life.
Later in the first season, Iseult stayed behind at a camp while Uhtred and his men went to fight the Danes, led by Skorpa (Jonas Malmsjö).
Skorpa and a few of his men went to target the camp in a surprise attack, and many of the villagers were slaughtered.
Iseult tried to run away but she was spotted by Skorpa, who caught up with her and ended up decapitating her.
He retrieved Iseult’s head and ended up throwing it at Uhtred’s feet, boasting that he had the head of Uhtred’s queen.
Fans were sad to see Iseult leave the series, and they have continued to praise actress Murphy for her interpretation of the role.
The award-winning Irish actress is also known for her role in the series Love/Hate, and she also took on a supporting role in Happy Valley.
Fans may also recognise her from Peaky Blinders, or the mini-series Rebellion. The star is on Instagram and she has shared photos of herself as Iseult, reminiscing about her time on the show.
In one post from May 2020, she said: “Binge watched the rest of series 4 of #TheLastKingdom on #Netflix last night. Such a good escape it gets better & better. Here’s me in Series 1 before they #spoileralert chop my head off. #offwiththeirheads #goodtimes #budapest #setlife [sic].”
The star does not seem too disappointed to have left the show in the first season, and she has had plenty of work to keep herself busy with having left.
Fans responded after watching her death episode, with one saying: “My wife and I just watched that episode and it was devastating!!! You were so good!”

Another fan said: “Just watching the last episode from S1, I’m very sad the way they killed Iseult. [sic]”
While she was still a part of the series, she took part in an interview praising the amount of detail that had gone into creating the Anglo-Saxon world.
She said: “It’s just fantastic, the attention to detail is stunning. Like every corner, if you turned the camera around right now you would see every brick. Everything is placed so perfectly.”
Fans have been following the actress’s success, and she won two Irish Film and Television Awards in 2013 and 2015, for her role in Love/Hate.
She also won a further two IFTA awards in 2017 for her role in Happy Valley, and a third for her role in Peaky Blinders in 2018.
The Last Kingdom has now been renewed for a fifth season and fans are still disappointed they will not be seeing Iseult any more.
Speaking about Uhtred’s relationships with women in the series, one fan said on Reddit: “I like all of them, but have a special spot for Iseult. “She knew her relationship with Uthred would eventually result in her death, (at least that was somewhat implied in the show).
“By choosing to have a physical relationship with Uthred, she lost the ability that possibly might have saved her.
“Additionally, she chose not to burden Uthred with this knowledge, she stayed unconditionally loyal to him until the end.”
Iseult was considered to be Uhtred’s first real match in the series, and they seemed to understand each other and make each other better people.
Uhtred was known to have enjoyed the danger and mystery that came with being involved with Iseult, and fans had also enjoyed the suspense.
