The competition is hotting up on Strictly Come Dancing as only ten stars remain in contention for the Glitterball Trophy. One person who is impressing the judges and BBC viewers alike is Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo, whose partnership with Aljaz Skorjanec has put a smile on everyone’s faces. When fans of the dance contest were first introduced to the star, she opened up about how much of a massive fan she was – but confessed she had previously been “too afraid” to sign-up before being approached once more this year.

Clara and Aljaz have got off to a good start on the Strictly dance floor and have so far managed to avoid being in the danger zone of the bottom two.

Last weekend, the pair performed a Tango to Lady Marmalade, which saw Clara bag her highest score so far.

Today, the radio presenter appeared on Loose Women to divulge gossip from behind-the-scenes of the hit show.

Amid preparations for her upcoming routine on Saturday night, Clara revealed she could have ended up being part of a previous series.

Clara was shown clips from her three performances so far, and admitted: “It’s so surreal even watching that, it doesn’t feel like it’s me!

“But I’m having the time of my life and I absolutely love being a part of this show, it’s bonkers!”

Moments later, she made a surprise admission after Ruth Langsford quizzed her on how long the self-confessed super-fan had wanted to do the show.

Clara responded: “Oh my God, do you know what’s funny? I’ve been asked to do the show a few times before but I was a bit too afraid.

“I think I was just too nervous, you know, this studio is my home, it’s where I feel safe, no one can really see me, I chat to my listeners and we have a laugh.”

She went on to explain how the idea of being “exposed” on the dance floor made her nervous as she’s used to the comfort of being on the airwaves.

Former contestant Ruth went on to ask her if she was “getting any sleep” as her gruelling schedule continued.

Clara joked: “Sleep, what is sleep?! I usually finish doing radio at one, get some lunch in, then usually I’m in a car from around two to get to [our] rehearsal space.

“We don’t stop till about 10, you don’t realise where the time goes! You walk in and it’s broad daylight and you leave and it’s pitch black!”

Fans saw Clara left delighted when she discovered she’d be paired with Aljaz this year after he made a visit to the BBC Radio 1 studios.

Although the celebrities and professionals have no say in who they end up competing alongside, Clara said she had been “hoping” to be partnered with Aljaz.

Of Aljaz, she gushed: “He’s an angel, such a good egg!

“I had no idea, I was hoping I was going to get him, I think energy-wise, he’s somebody I would be mates with.

“I just wanted to be with somebody I’d like. You spend so much time with someone, you’ve got to be able to have a laugh,” she noted.

This week, she will be tackling a new routine in the form of the Charleston – which she gave the panel a taster of.

The star has seen her score improve every week on the programme, so could she end up creeping closer to the top of the leaderboard on Saturday night?

And who will end up as the latest casualty of the Strictly ballroom and become the third celebrity to leave the competition?

Strictly Come Dancing returns this Saturday at 7:25pm on BBC One.
