Joining Janette Manrara on Strictly Come Dancing spin-off show It Takes Two, Craig was quizzed about the seven remaining couples following the latest episode’s Blackpool Week. He candidly replied that the current couples weren’t the seven he had expected, confessing he thought Tyler West would have made it further into the BBC competition.
As the two discussed the glitz and glamour of Blackpool, Janette commented: “It’s a really big event in the Strictly calendar, so how much do the couples really have to go up a notch to another level for that show?”
“Well, they do because they have to perform a little bit bigger than they would in the studio and how they feel in the studio,” the judge explained.
“Because the audience is a lot further away, it’s a much bigger space to actually get your story across.
“So it is difficult because it is like working in theatre, where the performance has to hit the back wall. But they all did-“
Janette cut in to add: “And they’ve got to dance with the extra dancers as well, that’s become part of the routine, which always makes things a little bit more complicated.”
As Craig agreed, the presenter continued: “We’ve got seven couples left in the competition, are these the seven you expected to see?”
“No, actually, oddly,” Craig confessed. He explained: “I did think Tyler would have gone through.
“It’s just one of those things, isn’t it? I think this happens sort of every year where we get two really good dancers that are put into the bottom two and we’ve got to choose out of them.
“And it’s really disappointing, but that’s the way it is and you’ve just got to deal with it.”
Tyler and his partner Dianne Buswell were eliminated from the show last week.
The pair faced the dreaded dance-off along with Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu.
Neither were at the bottom of the leaderboard, and their placement in the bottom two came as a surprise to judges and fans.
Craig had been the first judge to make a decision, stating: “Wow, both couples danced so much better, they really did.
“Tyler, incredible hips, this time round, amazing. Molly, lighter, brighter, and much more precise.
“I am finding this really difficult for the first time this season, but I would like to save Molly and Carlos.”
Motsi Mabuse made the same decision, while Anton Du Beke opted to save Tyler and Dianne.
Head judge Shirley Ballas had the deciding vote, and she chose to agree with Craig and Motsi.
Graciously accepting the loss, Tyler remarked: “When you watch the show at home, you wonder what it must be like to dance on it, it’s everything and more, it’s changed my life.
“This girl here has changed my life for sure. To think I was some shy kid who never used to talk to anyone, to dance in front of millions, I can’t put it into words. It’s my mum’s favourite show, I bought her to Blackpool, my nan bless her was always watching over me on this journey.
“But more importantly this show has changed my life in the sense it’s given me confidence, a newfound family, every dancer, everyone in hair and make-up, costume.
“The judges, it’s been amazing to dance in front of you every week, I genuinely mean that. But this girl here, I have been blessed with the best, she is what Strictly is about and she’s changed my life, I have no doubt she will be in my life forever.”
Strictly – It Takes Two airs on weekdays from 6.30pm on BBC Two.
