Season five of Outlander aired on Starz and Amazon Prime Video last year. The period drama is set to return in 2022 for a sixth series, but many fans are still focused on the events of the latest season and one character in particular – Young Ian. As the popular TV show is based on a series of fantasy novels by American author Diana Gabaldon, some viewers are turning to the books for answers about their favourite characters’ futures on the show. So, does Young Ian die in Outlander? has everything you need to know.

What has happened to Young Ian so far in Outlander?

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.

Ian Fraser Murray, more commonly known as Young Ian (played by John Bell), is the youngest son of Ian (Steven Cree) and Jenny Murray (Laura Donnelly).

He’s had a tough time in recent seasons of the drama series and season three saw him face a distressing experience.

Young Ian was kidnapped, taken to Jamaica and sold to Mrs Abernathy/Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), who was looking for a stone found only in virgins.

Luckily, as he was not a virgin at the time, Ian managed to survive but was still drugged and raped by Mrs Abernathy.

Eventually, he was rescued by his auntie and uncle Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Faser (Sam Heughan).

As a result the trio move to Fraser’s Ridge together in season four.

Towards the end of season four viewers see another move for Young Ian, as he agrees to stay with the Mohawk Tribe.

He made this decision as a trade, so Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin) could be set free after the tribe refused to give him back to the family after they infiltrated their town.

Jamie offered himself up at first and asked Young Ian to tell the Chief, but instead, the youngster secretly said he would go with them and they accepted.

Ian seemed happy to leave Fraser’s Ridge behind, as it was an opportunity to start a new adventure with the tribe.

But, when he did return once more in season five, it was clear things hadn’t gone according to plan.

The fifth season of the show saw Young Ian return to live with Jamie, Claire and the rest of his family.

However, after returning from the Mohawk tribe it was clear Young Ian was severely depressed.

As things eventually became too overwhelming for him, Young Ian attempted to kill himself via poisoning, but luckily he was stopped by Roger.

Afterwards, he opened up to Roger and shared with him a secret that was unknown to the rest of the family.

Young Ian told Roger that while he was living with the Mohawk tribe he had a wife.

But, he failed to go into anymore detail about what happened between them, leaving a lot of mystery surrounding the relationship.

While Young Ian is seemingly safe for now, the emotional scenes have left viewers concerned for his fate in future seasons of the show.

Could he end up attempting suicide again in the future if he cannot deal with his troubled past?

What happens to Young Ian in the books?

The sixth book in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, sees Young Ian open up further about his Mohawk wife Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa also known as Emily.

He revealed Emily suffered several miscarriages during their relationship and this resulted in a breakdown of their relationship leaving Young Ian heartbroken.

The couple do see each other again in the book series, but not until the seventh novel, An Echo in the Bone.

Will Young Ian’s storyline on the show stay truthful to the books?

Viewers will have to tune in to find out the fate of Young Ian. But, fans of the show will have to be patient as it’s not set to return until next year.

Season six is set to be released in early 2022 and The Outlander official Twitter account recently announced filming had wrapped on the season.

The post read: “In honor of #WorldOutlanderDay, I’m excited to announce that #Outlander Season 6 has officially wrapped and is coming your way in early 2022 with a 90-minute premiere episode!”
