Eamonn Holmes responds to speculation he and wife Ruth fear This Morning axe

This Morning presenter Eamonn Holmes has responded to speculation he and wife Ruth Langsford could be axed from the ITV show to make way for a younger and more diverse presenting team.

The 60-year-old couple have hosted the Friday edition of the daytime show since 2006.

They also stepped in to host the show in the week recently during Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's summer break.

Reports emerged on Friday (September 18), that ITV bosses are considering shaking up their current presenting line-up.

And there are claims Eamonn and Ruth are worried that might be at risk of being axed from the show.

Following the reports, Eamonn has responded to fans on Twitter who have been discussing the rumours.

One fan of the pair tweeted: "Executives at @thismorning best not be trying to axe @EamonnHolmes and @RuthieeL to fill their diversity quota.

"They’re brilliant hosts and nothing about the show needs changing! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! @ITV#ThisMorning#ITV "

Eamonn broke his silence on the rumours as he replied back to the fan by sharing a prayer emoji back.

The presenter then spoke out again to hit back as another social media user said they were glad to hear Eamonn and Ruth's role could be vulnerable.

The Twitter user fumed: "I used to love them, and thought they were brill! Till I found out their snobs.. that look down on the lower class!" as they referred to a joke made by Eamonn.

Eamonn replied defiantly: "U r really missing the joke. The joke being we r Council House …. and proud of it.

"Consistently champion working class people because that's what we are . Sorry if it was an in joke but the reality is very different."

Despite Eamonn speaking out, Ruth ignored the rumours as she shared a video of her strutting her stuff down the This Morning corridor to show off her outfit on Friday's show.

She wrote: "Sorry….forgot to post yesterday! Friday’s dress on @thismorning is from @lkbennettlondon (I added a belt) Tan, suede court shoes from @asos Styling by @rachaeleleri87 & @davidobrien75 #friday #studiostyle #whatiwore #ootd #fashion #thismorning."

According to The Sun, an internal ITV research group have launched a poll to find out the thoughts on changing up the presenters lists on the long-running daytime TV show.

A source told the publication: “Eamonn and Ruth are incredibly popular with viewers and loved across the board.

“No one wants to see them go. The shows execs have some very tricky decisions. Eamonn fears he is basically too ‘pale, stale and male’, and, at 60, perhaps not in line with the youth drive broadcasters are after.

“One possibility is to keep the couple on as regular holiday cover but lose their regular Friday slot.”

It's thought Rochelle Humes and Ore Oduba could be possible replacements, having both stepped in to successfully host the show before.

Back in July, ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said that the network would be working to "change in diversity and inclusion on screen and across ITV by creating more opportunities for those from Black, Asian, minority ethnic and other underrepresented groups."

Daily Star Online has contacted a This Morning representative for comment.
