EastEnders' Mila opens up about her FGM torture in devastating scenes

EastEnders’ Mila Marwa (Ruhtxjiaïh Bèllènéa) opened up to girlfriend Iqra Ahmed (Priya Davdra) about the horrific effects FGM (female genital mutilation) still has on her to this day.

The young woman told Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) earlier this week that she was forced to undergo FGM when she was a child.

Desperate to ensure sister Kioni (Florisa Kamara) doesn’t suffer the same fate, Mila has been pondering her next move.

Iqra, who remained in the dark about the traumatic experience her girlfriend had suffered, wasn’t pleased with the way Mila had been treating her, and tonight’s edition of the BBC One soap saw her end their relationship.

Mila, however, decided that it was time she was honest with Iqra, and therefore she explained in detail about what she went through as a child.

‘I was a lot younger than Kioni,’ she said, recalling the horrific experience. ‘Mum sold me the same story: that we were going to see an aunt.

‘We arrived at this normal-looking house: net curtains. Two cats. This woman ushered me into the backroom with some other girls and their mums.

‘I remember thinking: “If this is a party, then why didn’t my mum let me wear my party dress?”

‘I don’t remember. I blocked it. Just the smell. It wasn’t only later that I realised it was disinfectant. And the pain.

‘When it was done, my mum handed me a doll for being a good girl. She said: “Don’t cry, it’s all over”‘.

Mila went on to describe how – in spite of her mum’s claims – it’s not ‘over’, as she still suffers the effects of FGM to this day.

‘It hurts,’ she said, ‘I get infections. I have nightmares!

‘I can’t even be with you.’

Mila is desperate to stop Kioni from going through what she went through, and therefore she begged Iqra for help in stopping her mum Nyangi (Lucy Aadi) from taking the little girl away on the trip.

EastEnders continues Monday May 31 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
