Matt Hancock chatted to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain today after it was announced the Pfizer vaccine had been approved and the NHS stands ready to start vaccinating vulnerable people next week. However, Reid questioned why the UK was able to beat America and Europe to this pivotal moment.

Reid asked: “How comes we’ve become the first to approve this vaccine? We’re way ahead of Europe and the United States.”

“It’s partly down to the brilliant work of the Business Secretary and the vaccine task force at buying and getting access to the vaccine,” Hancock replied.

“It’s also down to the MRHA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) being a brilliant regulatory.

“We don’t often praise regulators when we talk about these sorts of things but what they’ve done they’ve been rigorous in their safety checks.”
