The controversial casting of Matt Hancock to the popular ITV show has seen anger from viewers since the series began. Matt was voted into the final three of this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alongside Lioness Jill Scott and actor Owen Warner. Matt’s appearance on the series immediately sparked a huge response from fans of the show, but despite the strong opposition, Matt sailed into the final three on Saturday night. In response, many viewers argued the show should be “cancelled”.
The MP’s conduct during the pandemic meant his casting into the popular annual show came as a shock to many.
As health secretary during the unprecedented period, Matt was the one to enforce lockdown rules on the nation, but while families across the country remained separated during the difficult time, the politician broke his own rules by starting an affair with his colleague, Gina Colangelo.
The two were caught on camera kissing when mixing with non-household members was banned.
Matt was forced to resign shortly after but remains an MP, although several politicians spoke out against his casting to the reality series.
Following Saturday’s news that Matt had made it to the final after Mike Tindall was voted out, some fans were left furious.
Twitter user @Debra_SAFC sarcastically wrote: “#ImACeleb 3 weeks in the jungle seems to have cancelled out the last 2 years of f***wittery by Matt Hancock. #teamjill.”
@GGHayley added: “Something seriously wrong when Matt Hancock is in the final slimeball #ImACeleb.”
@vampettexx penned: “It is so wrong to see matt in the final #ImACeleb.”
“It should’ve been Seann, Mike, Owen and Jill in the final four #ImACeleb People who have voted to keep Matt in have very short memories and have lost the plot… if he’s in the final two… that’s so wrong! #Imaceleb2022,” @_justjennie posted.
@ellrbrown argued: “I’m a Celeb should be cancelled and Mr Hancock lose his seat.”
@MarkCunliffe76 shared: “I know you are trying to host a jolly show, but how many deaths did Matt Hancock cause? Enjoy your popping of champagne corks as you surely will do. But the question still lays around just how many deaths Matt Hancock was directly attributed to.”
@SirBob17851512 remarked: “I’m angry. Ant and Dec need to have a good look in the mirror. these celebs are a major part of the problem. @MattHancock is vile and this show is sticking two fingers up at those that cared. It just disgusts me.” (sic)
The final, which saw Matt, Jill and Owen participating in the grueling final Bushtucker Trials, meant Matt had a chance of going on to win the series.
On Sunday, the runner-up was announced before one of the two finalists was voted as the winner.
Matt ended up coming third, and expressed his gratitude he had made it so far.
Jill and Owen were the last celebrities standing, and the public voted in their thousands to crown the winner.
Lioness Jill was ultimately voted the winner. After informing Jill the majority of votes received went to her, Dec questioned if it was hard to take in.
She commented: “I just can’t believe it honestly, I think I’m going to owe my grandma a lot of money for the 12 million votes.
“Yeah definitely, look these guys were absolutely incredible. We were one big team, I don’t think there should be one winner.
“We couldn’t have got through it without all of us and I think we’ve all been winners of I’m A Celebrity.”
