Inside Our Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen's life as a model before huge career change to become shepherdess

AMANDA Owen's life as a mum-of-nine and shepherdess on a busy farm is well documented on Channel 5 show, Our Yorkshire Farm.

But her life could have been very different indeed if she had continued the modelling career she first set out to pursue when she was a teen.

Growing up in Huddersfield, Amanda aspired to follow in her mum's footsteps by becoming a model.

However, the reality of model life turned out to be very different from what Amanda had expected.

Speaking on the show, Amanda revealed: "When you think you're going to be a model in like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, but actually then you end up doing knitting catalogues and things like."

She added: "It was cardigans, floral, Prince Diana 1980. No thank you."

While she had a family connection to modelling, the same could not be said for farming.

Amanda became interested in being a shepherdess after reading a library book about a hill shepherd and seeing all the pictures of the beautiful scenery and animals.

She explained: "It was the pictures, it was the landscape, it was the people — everything in that book just appealed to me.

"It wasn't glossing over the hard side, it was very real and very gritty and atmospheric but it was just the thought of working outdoors and actually doing something, having a physical job where you were out there feeling the elements — windburn, sunburn, rained on, all the rest of it — sounded like a good idea back then."

The rest – as they say – is history, as Amanda became a trainee shepherdess and met her husband Clive when she was 21.

Despite the 21 year age gap, the couple ended up marrying and now have nine children together, who all feature in the programme.

Our Yorkshire Farm airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 5.
