ITV’s Lorraine calls Anne Widdecombe a ‘rubbish Marie Antoinette’ in cheese sandwich row
Lorraine Kelly shared her thoughts on Anne Widdecombe saying poorer families “shouldn’t make a cheese sandwich if they can’t afford it” during Wednesday’s episode of her ITV talk show.
The Scottish broadcaster began: “The former Tory MP Anne Widdecombe has come under fire this morning for saying no one is entitled to cheap food after being asked what she thought of the cost of a homemade cheese sandwich rising by a third.”
Anne appeared on BBC’s Politics Live to discuss the sharp rise across the nation in food prices.
A clip was shown to Lorraine viewers when host Jo Coburn asked: “What do you say to consumers who literally can’t afford to pay for even some of the basics if they have gone up the way that cheese sandwich has, with all its ingredients?”
Anne replied: “Well then you don’t do the cheese sandwich.
“Because we have been decades without inflation we have come to regard it as some sort of given right that our food doesn’t go up.”
After airing the interview, Lorraine jibed: “She’s the most rubbish Marie Antoniette there’s ever been, I think.
“Her remarks come as it’s been revealed nearly 11 million adults in the UK are struggling with bills.”

Ahead of Anne making the sandwich comment, she was informed the cost of a homemade cheese sandwich had risen to 40p per serving.
The former Maidstone MP claimed farmers “constantly” complained to her about supermarket pricing when she was in the Tory Party.
Lorraine’s swipe didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who took to social media to comment.
Joe shared: “@Reallorraine did you just call Widdecombe, The Worst Marie Antoinette? How can she be so blind to what people are going through #Lorraine.”
Angela added: “#Lorraine just branded Ann Widcombe the worst Marie Antoinette ever.”
Marjorie remarked: “Quick snippet about the cost of living crisis before we go back to Cannes… #lorraine.”
Lorraine airs on weekdays from 9am on ITV and ITVX.
