When Joy Rodriguez-Adams, 42, and her husband moved into their home ten years ago, their garden was fine, but a bit plain.
Lockdown provided the perfect opportunity to give it a good refresh.
Last summer, they set about transforming their outdoor space, doing it all themselves to cut down on costs.
Now, the garden has a large seating area, extended decking, a built-in BBQ, artificial grass, an an oudoor bar called The Tipsy Cow.
And taking the DIY route meant the couple saved £25,000.
While a professional quoted them over £40,000 for the job, Joy and her husband managed to complete the garden for under £15,000.
As an added bonus, all that hard work brought the family some TikTok fame – the garden has been viewed more than one million times and has brought in 70,000 followers.
‘The garden has changed a number of times over the years but this year, I decided I wanted to add a few more features to make it ready for the summer,’ said Joy.
‘We wanted more seating so our teens could have their friends round and we built the entire corner sofa out of wood and used cot mattresses for cushions.
‘We’re waiting for a fire pit to be delivered to complete that cosy section, but the kids love it and we spend most of our time out there.
‘During the first lockdown, we decided we wanted to create our own bar, so we transformed my old office space in the garden by adding a bar area, television, sofa, fridge freezer, beer pump and made sure it was fully stocked ready for the summer.
‘In the summer, we’re never in the house because we love to use the garden to its full potential.’
Missing pubs and restaurants in the first lockdown inspired Joy to take the garden up a level.
‘We created our own bar because we missed being able to go out and that’s been an amazing social space for the whole family to use,’ she said.
Some of her favourite small business for garden accessories include Festive Lights, Value Lights, The Basket Company, and Outside Gang.
To other people keen for a garden makeover, Joy strongly recommends having a go at doing it yourself.
She said: ‘People can save a fortune by doing some of the work themselves – just give it a go!
‘A lot of people are nervous to give it a go, but the cost of landscaping and garden design is through the roof.’
