Fans of Netflix series Ozark were left reeling in shock after Omar Navarro (played by Felix Solis) ordered the death of his formerly trusted attorney Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer). Despite being an intimidating presence on the series, Helen’s time was soon up after Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) proved themselves to be must more valuable to the cartel. The lawyer was killed off right in front of the couple with the pair covered in Helen’s blood and gore.

They were left stunned by the sudden killing considering they had been summoned by Navarro to attend the second christening of his new-born son after the first one ended in a blood-soaked massacre.

To make matters even more surreal, Navarro went in to embrace Marty and Wendy as they were frozen in fear from the murder they’d just witnessed.

This scene cemented Marty and Wendy’s position as Navarro’s now most trusted associates and upped the levels of danger.

Helen’s killing in front of them was also a warning of what could befall the couple if they ever failed to deliver for the cartel.

Although Helen’s death was shocking, the writers had been dropping breadcrumbs along the way about her demise.

Right at the start of season three, Helen was waterboarded by some of Navarro’s henchmen as she tried to convince them her family knew nothing of her business dealings.

Later, she strangely asked Nelson (Nelson Bonilla) to tell her if he had been given orders to kill her – another moment of foreshadowing.

However, these were tiny, subtle clues which could be easily missed.

Instead, it looked for moment like Helen was going to move to the Ozarks, kill off the Byrdes and steal their businesses.

Before this could happen, Navarro swooped in and made an executive decision with Helen meeting her maker.

Helen was shot dead in Mexico, so it seems likely her body will be disposed of by some of the cartel’s men south of the border.

The American government doesn’t have the jurisdiction to investigate in Mexico unless they can find significant evidence to prove Helen was killed by a cartel.

So, it looks like Helen might just go missing and never return – something which appeared to happen to Marty midway through season three when he was abducted by the cartel. Luckily, he managed to prove his loyalty and was spared by the cartel.

In Ozark people disappear very easily and are never seen again with little recourse and the same thing could happen to Helen.

Only Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) and Charlotte Byrde (Sofia Hublitz) are likely to twig what’s happened.

There could also be questions from the FBI as well about Helen’s whereabouts which could see Marty and Wendy feel the heat.

Helen’s death is likely to cause huge problems for the Byrdes with a question mark over her daughter Erin Pierce (Madison Thompson) who discovered what her mother really did for a living.

Star, producer and director Bateman recently told Indiewire: “I do know where everything is going to end.

“The specifics leading up to it, I didn’t really grind [showrunner Chris Mundy] on.

“But I was interested in the big question he has the opportunity to answer: Are they going to get away with it, or are they going to pay a bill?”

“We had some great conversations about that, and he’s got really good ideas about that.

“Specifically, what kind of happens at the end of the last episode: I know, and it’s great.”
