Marty (played by Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) look like they’re going to need all the help they can get in Ozark’s fourth and final season on Netflix. While they may have the backing of the Navarro Cartel’s murderous leader Omar (Felix Solis), they still face formidable opposition in the form of Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) and Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner). But could a new character hold the key as the show welcomes an Oscar-nominee to its cast?
Heading into season four and the final-ever 14 episodes of Ozark, the Byrdes look like they’re going to face their biggest challenges to date.
In fact, showrunner Chris Mundy even spoke out on Ruth’s rivalry with the Byrdes, confirming she’ll be a “fierce opposition” after cutting ties once and for all following the death of Ben Davis (Tom Pelphrey).
But while the series stalwarts will be going to war, there’s going to be plenty of other returning faces playing their part – as well as some new players to the fray.
And one of these newbies goes by the name of Randall Schafer, portrayed by X-Men star Bruce Davison.
Davison has signed up for a recurring role in the fourth and final run of Ozark, according to Deadline.
The publication details the character: “Davison will play Randall Schafer, a powerful retired Illinois U.S. Senator who is accustomed to doing things his way.
“He is not always easy to win over… but for the right price…”
While it hasn’t been explicitly clear he will side with the Byrdes, his profile certainly fits the bill for how the husband and wife operate.
For years now, fans have witnessed the Byrdes use their money to get what they want.
Whether it be bribing their marriage counsellor Sue (Marylouise Burke) or exploiting the naivety of Sam Dermody (Kevin Johnson), they’re no strangers to dishing out big bucks.
And Marty and Wendy are also no strangers to meddling with politics and people in places of high status, case in point Charles Wilkes (Darren Goldstein).
The two manipulated Charles into having their casino bill pushed through local government, at the same time implementing him into their criminal enterprise via an “anonymous” and lucrative donation to his fund.

And given Schafer sounds just as shady and corrupt, he could be perfect for Marty and Wendy to have on side.
But just why would they need a former high-ranking politician and what could they gain from an alliance?
Fans will have to wait for season four to drop to find out but in the meantime, they can catch Davison in a number of high-profile roles.
The Ozark newcomer landed an Oscar nod for his part in 1989 drama Longtime Companion opposite Campbell Scott and Patrick Cassidy.
Marvel fans will instantly recognize the star for his portrayal of Senator Kelly in the first X-Men film.
Last year, he appeared on the big screen in We Still Say Grace, Await the Dawn and Pearl.
His CV also boasts roles in NCIS sister show JAG, Freeform series The Fosters and ABC mystery drama Last resort.
Ozark season 4 is scheduled for release on Netflix later this year.
