Spoilers: Jean stops taking her bipolar medication in EastEnders

Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) found herself with a new lease of life after meeting and falling in love with Daniel Cook (Adrian Edmondson) while they were both fighting cancer in EastEnders. As she grew to adore his wit, his lack of tact and his mischief, the pair found themselves laughing in the face of their own mortality – with Daniel urging her to ‘be more Jean’ and maintain the fierceness that she holds within her.

Empowered by his words and his love following his death, Jean went out of her comfort zone tonight in order to take on scheming Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), who has been lying about having cancer in order to get her children to forgive her previous actions.

With Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) there for support, Jean took Suki to a cancer survivors’ bakery sale where people who have been through it can share their experiences and support. But when Jean put Suki to the test, she avoided questions and raised more suspicions before Jean bravely took a stand and outed her for faking her illness.

Despite Suki turning the tables and becoming vicious against Jean, Jean stood up to her and her threats and later told the Panesar family the truth about their mother’s despicable lies.

At home, a proud Shirley congratulated Jean on how much stronger she had become – and she put it down to her meeting Daniel. As jean admitted she had started to see things more clearly recently, Shirley smiled warmly at her, not realising that Jean has stopped taking her bipolar medication.

After her victory of showing Suki’s true colours, Jean reached a decision and got rid of the rest of her medication – but given that it is massively against medical advice to come off long term medication without the support of a doctor – Jean may live to regret this.

Will the symptoms of her bipolar disorder start to intensify again – and will anyone realise what Jean has done before she becomes more ill again?
