This Theory About the Very Last Scene of 'Dead to Me' Is Bonkers

[This post contains SO MANY spoilers for Dead to Me season 1.]

Netflix’s new series, Dead to Me, is truly the gift that keeps on giving. If you are still hungry after binging the entire first season of the dark comedy, it’s probably time to put on some stretchy pants. As more people are watching (and rewatching) the show, the internet is filling up with incredible theories. I am eating. them. up. Seriously, each theory is better than the last.

In my opinion, the juiciest theories stem from the details that most of us would overlook. This particular theory is so mind-boggling, that I’ll be shocked if it’s not just the exact plot of season two. (If there’s going to be a second season.) I just don’t know what else they could possibly write that would top this? Anyway, it’s a theory that a genius Reddit user has conspired about who really killed Steve. Spoiler: It was Karen, the neighbor.

Karen is secretly a really important character.

Did you ever stop to think about the fact that it was kind of strange that Jen’s neighbor, Karen, suddenly returned in the last episode? Maybe you didn’t, because it seemed like her purpose was to show that Jen had grown. You were likely too surprised that Jen would even invite a neighbor over for drinks to pause and think hmm…this is fishy.

Reddit user Maryssmith pointed out that Karen’s random return must be a signal that if there is going to be a season two, she will play an important role. Think of it this way. In Dead to Me, every tiny detail means something. Karen is the first character that we meet after Jen. She brings her “take on Mexican lasagna” to Jen in the first scene of the first episode. And that might be a hint.

Quick side note: It doesn’t really make sense for Charlie to have shot Steve.

Some fan theories suggest that Charlie is the one who killed Steve. But those theories ignore the fact that Nick took Charlie’s gun, and he wouldn’t have had easy access to a weapon to shoot Steve with. Charlie also walked into the main house, but based on the way Steve was floating in the pool, a shooter likely got him from behind. This would mean that Charlie would have had find a gun, then run out of the house (in front of Steve) and get behind him to shoot him in the back. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Not to mention, Charlie’s still just a kid that can get spooked easily. Maryssmith brings up the fact that if he really did kill Steve, Jen would probably be consoling Charlie instead of calmly looking at Steve’s floating body.

Karen may have come back to Jen’s house.

Karen loves security systems, and Jen’s alarm goes off shortly after Karen leaves their wine night. It was just Jen’s son, Charlie trying to get back into the house…but it seems likely that Karen would have ran back over to Jen’s to see what was going on. It would almost be weird if she didn’t, TBH.

Karen is the actual killer.

This theory suggests that Karen heard the alarm and snuck back to Jen’s to see what was going on. (With a gun. Because she said she loves and has guns!) She hangs around because she’s a nosy, bored person, and happens to see the face-off between Jen and Steve. Then, bang, she shoots him.

IDK, this feels pretty convincing to me. Then again, I also believe that Katy Perry and JonBenét Ramsey are the same person…and they were literally born six years apart.
