Ten more famous faces will be spending three weeks together in Wales for the upcoming 2021 series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Ahead of the show’s return on Sunday, GMB presenters Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins spoke to Vernon Kay about his time on ITV’s iconic survival series.
Vernon appeared on the 20th series of the celebrity competition, placing third below Giovanna Fletcher and Jordan North.
He joined I’m A Celeb as the series moved from Australia to Wales for the first time due to travel restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.
As the show gears up to return for its second post-pandemic series, GMB’s Ben asked what it was like to spend time with the same nine people for nearly three weeks.
Reflecting on last year’s series, he said: “You’re all on top of each other.”
“We were talking to Caitlyn Jenner, and obviously she was in Australia, and she said it can get very boring as well.”
The TV personality agreed, but thankfully Vernon was grouped with a chatty team of celebs who managed to keep each other’s spirits up.
He recalled: “There are times where you kind of think ‘what are we doing now?’ And you just sit and chat.
“We were in a really good group because everyone had the patience to listen to everyone when they spoke.”
“There was no one chipping in, there was no one forcing their opinion on anyone.”
Although everyone did their bit to keep the group motivated, one person, in particular, managed to get Vernon’s attention with their antics.
“We had a really, really good group,” he continued. “But I’ll be honest with you, Shane kept our camp alive.”
Former EastEnders star Shane Richie only came fourth in last year’s competition.

However, he quickly became a firm fan favourite and regaled his fellow celebs with anecdotes from his long career on the stage and screen.
Unfortunately for ITV viewers, Vernon admitted some of his stories weren’t acceptable to be shown on television.
He recalled: “He is the funniest bloke, with the best stories that didn’t make it on air.
“He’s more rock and roll than any famous rock and roll star.”
Ben added: “So if they ever release I’m A Celebrity Uncensored, there’ll be a lot of Shane Richie on there?”
Again, Vernon said: “I don’t think they’d make it on air! But he’s got the best stories, I mean, he’s lived a life.”
This year’s line-up includes fellow soap star Danny Miller and Ben and Charlotte’s GMB colleague Richard Madeley, so there are undoubtedly even more classic I’m A Celeb moments to come in the following weeks.
