After over two decades on Emmerdale, Lisa Dingle is getting ready to say goodbye to her family as she’s been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Lisa Dingle (played by Jane Cox) has been a staple character on the soap since 1996, but sadly she’s been diagnosed with a condition called Amyloidosis – which results in the buildup harmful protein in your tissue and/or organs – and therefore she sadly is not long for this earth.
She eventually came clean to her family about her condition in tear-jerking scenes earlier this month.
With Lisa’s death drawing the character’s time on Emmerdale to a very definitive close, many fans have been left wondering why Jane Cox is taking her leave of the soap…
Why is Jane Cox leaving Emmerdale?
Jane Cox told metro.co.uk that leaving the soap was her decision, and that she believed having Lisa die was the best option for an ending for the character.
Even though playing Lisa Dingle has been her ‘dream job’, Jane said: ‘I’ve been part of her for 23 years, so it’s a long time.
‘But I’m 66 now, and I felt – I’m very young – but I wanted to not be working at this pace so much in the future, and I’ve got lots of other things that I want to do, not necessarily acting but there’s lots of things that I’m interested in, and if I didn’t do it now, I probably wouldn’t.’
Jane added: ‘The world is out there to be explored and I’m very happy to be living a simpler life and have times for friends,’ she said, explaining the long hours filming leaving little time for much else motivated her to make the change.
‘Don’t get me wrong, it’s been my dream job!’ she clarified.
On the topic of Lisa’s death, she said: ‘I think it’s better really, I think it tells a complete story, and there’s a lot of people out there who are dealing with terminal illnesses.
‘So it tells the story properly I think, I could go to Spain for years or whatever, but I think it gives a truthful hopefully end to Lisa’s story.’
Even though there’s tragedy ahead, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be all doom and gloom in the Dingle family, as Zak (Steve Halliwell) and Lisa are planning on getting re-married in tonight’s episode.
The bittersweet ceremony is sure to bring a tear to many-a-viewer’s eye, as we still don’t know exactly how long Lisa Dingle has left…
