Bill Gates hosted naked pool parties with strippers in his wild bachelor days, biographer claims

BILL Gates once held naked parties with strippers during his wild bachelor days, his biographer has claimed.

The Microsoft founder, who recently separated from his wife Melinda after 27 years, was "no choir boy" during his early years leading the company, journalist James Wallace says.

Wallace, who authored two books about Gates during the 1990s, told the Daily Mail that the billionaire was far more than just "a little computer nerd".

"A lot of those Microsoft kids back then, they were young guys in pizza-stained t-shirts for two or three days working on software code," he said.

"Then they would have some pretty wild parties, where they would go out and get strippers in Seattle and bring them over to Bill's home."

The alleged parties took place at Gates' Laurelhurst, Washington home and were first detailed in Wallace's 1997 book, Overdrive: Bill Gates and the Race to Control Cyberspace.

He described the parties as "wild" and said the racy events would often see Gates and his entourage flock to one of Seattle's all-nude nightclubs and "hire dancers to come to his home and swim naked with his friends in his indoor pool."

Wallace also described a young Gates as a renowned "womanizer", with his antics reportedly placing a strain on his relationship with Melinda while they were dating.

"Though Gates began dating French [Melinda's maiden name] in 1988, he continued to play the field for a while, especially when he was out of town on business, when he would frequently hit on female journalists who covered Microsoft and the company industry," a passage of the book reads.

"His womanizing was well known, although not well reported, because Gates and Microsoft spoon-fed stories to industry writers for such papers as the New York Times, and none of them wanted the flow of information to stop."

Melinda was said to be "well aware" of Gate's womanizing, and "consequently their relationship ran hot and cold."

"At one point, they broke up for nearly a year, reportedly because Gates refused to make any kind of commitment. When they got back together again in 1992, however, the relationship grew closer and stronger," Wallace continued.

Vern Raburn, Gates's longtime friend and former Microsoft executive, also spoke to the Daily Mail to corroborate Wallace's claims.

Raburn agreed that Gate's rampant womanizing plagued his early relations with Melinda after they began dating in 1988.

He added that Gates "liked to party".

However, Gates put all playboy antics behind him when he and Melinda tied the knot in 1994, Raburn said.

"I never saw any of that. Certainly prior to their marriage, yeah. Bill liked to party. But I never saw any of that after the marriage," he told the outlet.

"In fact, I had dinner with him one night. He said he was very proud of the fact that he hadn't done any of that since he got married."

Bill and Melinda Gates announced last week that they were ending their marriage after 27 years together.

The couple reportedly waited until their third and youngest child turned 18 before announcing the split.

The separation also appears to be years in the making, with Melinda having allegedly first contacted divorce attorneys two years ago.

The reason for their split remains unclear. Raburn theorized that the couple may have just grown apart in recent years and "didn't always share the same interests."

Their eponymous multi-billion-dollar charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was one such ground of disagreement, Raburn said.

Rumours as to what caused the couple's split have been rife since the news of their divorce broke last week.

TMZ reported on Thursday that Melinda and other family members were "furious" at Gates for an unspecified incident and that the pair had been hashing out their divorce agreement for months.

Speculation has also extended to the close relationship he shares with his ex-girlfriend Ann Windbald, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist.

While Gates and Winbald separated in 1987, the year before Melinda came into the picture, the tech guru and his ex still vacationed together alone for a weekend once a year throughout his marriage.

The arrangement was reportedly formalized ahead of his marriage to Melinda, though the Gates and Windbald's relations have been characterized as strictly platonic.

Rumours also surfaced on Chinese social media last week that Gates had been having an affair with a 36-year-old interpreter who works for his and Melinda's foundation.

The Seattle-based translate at the center of the rumors, Zhe "Shelley" Wang, has since dismissed the claims.

Another reason spurring the couple's divorce could be Gate's famed intensity and work ethic.

Wallace told the Daily Mail that many of Gate's exes described him as frugal, aloof, and taxing to be with.

"[Gates and his then-girlfriend] were supposed to be at a software conference in Seattle and they were running late," Wallace said.

"But Gates is driving around all over these blocks near the conference because he doesn't want to pay for valet parking, he wanted to find a meter that he can put a few quarters into.

"This is a guy who's already a multi-millionaire, his company is already public, and he's driving around looking for a parking meter that he can put quarters into because he says 'I don't want to pay for valet parking, it costs too much.'"

Winbald also spoke to Wallace back in 1997, and said dating Gates was more of a "test" than a romantic foray.

"This is not just a serendipitous choice," she told him. "A relationship with Bill early on is a test. Are you smart enough? Do you have enough common sense? Can you make the grade? Are you athletic enough?"

The ex-girlfriend added that while Gates "could have chosen any woman to wife for life", choosing Melinda means "she is an exceptional woman."

Melinda Gates broke her silence since announcing her split from bill to pen a heartfelt Mother's Day message on social media on Sunday.

The 56-year-old philanthropist wrote of her love of being a parent and spoke about "resilience."

Melinda shared a snap of her embracing her three children – Jennifer, 25, Phoebe, 18, and 21-year-old Rory – on both Instagram and Twitter.

The mom-of-three is all smiles in the picture, with Rory's arm around her as the four of them laugh together.

"I love being their mother," Melinda captioned the photo.

"To anyone celebrating a mom or a mother figure, honoring a memory of someone you loved, or reflecting on your own resilience today, I hope your day is a meaningful one."

Bill and Melinda announced their split on Twitter last week, citing that the marriage was "irretrievably broken".

"We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives," Bill said.

"We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life."

Melinda joined Microsoft in 1987 and met Bill at a business dinner in New York City.

After a year of dating, it was reported that Bill had to make a pros and cons list about getting married.

The couple eventually married on January 1, 1994 in Hawaii.
