A CLEANER trapped in a lift for two days drank her urine to survive.
The woman, thought to be in her 50s, was finally discovered with bruises from her failed escape attempts.
Police rescued her after being alerted by her worried family over the Bank Holiday weekend.
She was last seen on Friday afternoon and was freed on Sunday lunchtime at the three-storey Margate Adult Education Centre in Kent. She was taken to hospital for tests.
One relative said the woman, who has not been named, had to drink her own urine to stave of dehydration. Staff at the centre said she was off work yesterday.
It is not known why a lift alarm did not call in help.
Police confirmed: “While carrying out inquiries, officers found the woman had become trapped in a lift. Officers were able to manually open it and free the woman, who was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been made aware.”
Kent County Council said it had launched an investigation with Kier Facilities Management, who carry out cleaning and maintenance, and that the woman was being given support.
Both it and Kier said they were unable to comment further.
