Italy death toll jumps by 250 in one day to 1,266

The number of people killed by the coronavirus outbreak in Italy has surged by 25% in the last 24 hours.

Authorities confirmed 250 more deaths today bringing the country’s total up to 1,266. It is the largest increase in absolute terms since the start of the outbreak, the Civil Protection Agency said today.

It comes as Europe was declared the ‘epicentre of the pandemic’ by the World Health Organisation, with more cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined excluding China. Already sweeping emergency measures have seen bars, restaurants, sports stadiums, schools and cinemas shut down as part of a nationwide lockdown in Italy.

It is the worst hit country outside of China with 17,660 confirmed cases of the coronavirus strain named Covid-19 – up 17% from 15,113 yesterday.

In a statement UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his ‘expresses his solidarity and sympathy with Italy’.
