President Trump has reached out to the two LA County deputies who were wounded in a brazen ambush to wish them a speedy recovery – and spoke to the female officer, who was seen in her hospital bed.
Claudia Apolinar, 31, who was shot multiple times at close range with her 24-year-old male partner, received the call from the president with her husband at her bedside, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department.
Because of her injuries, the mother of one relayed her responses to Trump though LASD Transit Sgt. Frederickson, the department said in a Facebook post.
The other injured deputy has been released and is receiving long-term care, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said, according to NBC Los Angeles.
“A week ago today, a callous and heartless criminal attempted to murder two of the heroes that work hard every day to keep you safe when ride @metrolosangeles,” the department wrote in the post.
“The outpouring of love and support from our Department, @lacosheriff, the community, and indeed from around the world, has been overwhelming, but also very much appreciated!” it said.
“This week #potus45 @realdonaldtrump called both of our deputies to check on their spirits, wish them a speedy recovery and remind them that the #american people are behind them and that the coward that harmed them will be brought to #justice!!”
Apolinar, a former librarian who just graduated the police academy last year, was struck in the jaw during the chilling, caught-on-video Sept. 12 shooting. She made a tourniquet for her partner before medics arrived.
The search for the suspect continues and sources told NBC LA that a man taken into custody after a carjacking in Lynwood was linked to the probe, although Villanueva has not confirmed that information.
