Julia Roberts has broken her silence on actor Matthew Perry's tragic death, just over one month after the Friends actor was found dead at his home in Los Angeles.
The Pretty Woman actress, 56, briefly dated Matthew, who played Chandler Bing in the hit US sitcom, in the 1990s. The pair's romance occurred around the same time Julia appeared in Friends episode The One After the Super Bowl in 1996, as Chandler's love interest and old school friend Susie Moss.
Julia has now spoken out about ex Matthew's sudden passing on 28 October, branding it "heartbreaking" in a new interview.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: "The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking. I think that you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can."
The actress went on to discuss her one-off appearance in Friends. Julia added: "All good thoughts and feelings. They were all so welcoming to me as just a one-off character and it was a really fun time."
Despite Julia and Matthew's brief relationship eventually fizzling out, the two actors appeared to remain on good terms with Matthew discussing their romance in his autobiography, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which was released in November 2022.
Matthew wrote: "Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me.
"Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”
Matthew tragically died aged 54 on 28 October 2023 after he was found unresponsive in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home. His funeral was held on Friday, 3 November, at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in the Hollywood Hills.
Following Matthew's death, The Matthew Perry Foundation has been launched in honour of him. Matthew had continued to help those struggling with addiction after his own struggles, with the new organisation aiming to continue his work.
The charity's focus is described as: "The realisation of Matthew’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction. It will honour his legacy and be guided by his own words and experiences and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible."
The organisation is sponsored and maintained by public charity the National Philanthropic Trust.
