Summer is now but a distant memory, and as we begin to get cosy and ready for autumn, we’re going to need a few extra tips and tricks to help keep our makeup protected from the elements.
From rain-induced panda eyes to unexpected sweating from cranked up heating, trying to keep your makeup looking fresh throughout a dreary autumn day is a challenge, but don’t despair – there are plenty of products that will help keep your face in place all day long.
From must-have waterproof mascaras to the best primers and fixing sprays to use, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to help weatherproof your makeup from the autumn drizzle.
Back to basics
Starting with the right base is key to keeping your makeup more firmly in place no matter what the British weather throws at it. Using a primer not only makes your makeup products apply more smoothly, but it also gives them something to grip onto – key for stopping them sliding around.
The Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, £18 here, is considered one of the best primers out there, as not only does it give your makeup a velcro-like grip to your skin, but it also hydrates your skin whilst you wear it, which is ideal for combatting dry skin caused by the dropping temperatures.
Rain-proof your lashes
Nothing ruins your makeup faster than your eye makeup running, as more often than not you end up having to remove pretty much your whole face just to get rid of the dreaded panda eyes, and with wind making them stream and rain getting to them, autumn is one of the worst seasons for running mascara.
Waterproof mascara is one of the best ways to combat this, and tubing mascaras help give and extra layer of protection from water. Tubing mascaras, like ZOEVA’s Ooh la Lash Length & Lift Tubing Mascara, £21 here, are designed to avoid flaking and smudging making them ideal for staying in place no matter the weather. You can also opt for a regular waterproof mascara, like MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara – Gigablack, £18 here (was £20), to combat the rain.
Double up your eyeliner
Eyeliner is another pesky culprit when it comes to the rain spoiling your makeup look, but there’s a sneaky little hack you can do to help keep it in place. Start off by applying your go-to waterproof eyeliner, whether it’s a liquid one, like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, £13.60 here (was £17), or a pencil, like the Eyeko Limitless Long-Wear Pencil Eyeliner, £11.25 here (was £15).
Next, add a cream eyeshadow over the top, like the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour, £26 here, which adds an extra waterproof layer over the top to help it stay in place all day long.
Powder up
Translucent setting powder isn’t just perfect for removing excess shine; it also helps keep your makeup in place and gives it an extra waterproof element that stops your foundation from sliding down your face in the rain or when you’re sweating from having the heating on.
An absolute cult favourite is the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, £29.20 here (was £36.50), which has become a staple for celebs likeMolly-Mae Hauge. If you prefer a pressed powder, Urban Decay’s All Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder, £27 here, is perfect for popping in your handbag to keep on top of your makeup all day (and night).
Fix it in place
Finish off your weatherproof makeup with a liberal spritz of your go-to setting spray to really help lock it in place – even if you get caught in a torrential downpour. The fixative spray secures your makeup and adds a waterproof layer over the top of it that prevents rain, wind, and friction (like a scarf) from rubbing your makeup off.
We particularly love the ultra-affordable e.l.f. Stay All Night Setting Mist, £9 here (or £7.20 with a Boots Advantage Card), which is infused with green tea, cucumber, and aloe which help to nourish skin and keep your makeup looking as fresh as though you just applied it. If you prefer a more matte finish, both the Lottie London’s Stay Matte AF, £8.95 here, and the Milani Make It Last Matte Charcoal Spray, £14.50 here, reduce shine and control oil for a mattified finish.
Although we’re not a fan of heading out in all weathers, at least now our makeup doesn’t have to suffer the wrath of the autumn downpours.
