The decision to end the relationship was made by Kelis, 44, according to a source close to the couple – and while their alleged romance may now be over, it appears the couple have no intention of ending their close friendship.

Speaking to The Sun, the source revealed: “Kelis and Bill were — and still are — very fond of each other but things just ran their course.

"They both have busy schedules and after a whirlwind romance decided to go their separate ways. They hope to remain friends but also plan to get on with their lives.”

OK! have reached out to representatives of the couple for comment.

The couple first went public with their "romance" back in June, after Bill was spotted joining mum-of-three-Kelis on her summer festival tour.

Despite a large age gap existing between the couple, Bill who will turn 73 next month, and Kelis appeared to have been having plenty of fun together before the split

Bill was snapped backstage at her performance at the Mighty Hoopla festival in Brockwell Park, and was keen to cheer on the star as she delighted audiences with her stage presence and flawless voice.

Sources revealed at the time that the pair had been staying at the same hotel and began to get close after enjoining a chance meeting.

It was after this meeting that the duo discovered they had a number of shared interests and were also able to lean on each other after sadly losing a spouse in just a short time of each other.

Kelis’s second husband Mike Mora sadly passed away in March 2002, while Bill’s estranged wife Jennifer Butler had died just one year prior to this in 2001.

It was partly through this shared experience that the couple were able to bond.

However, despite hinting at a romance, neither Kelis nor Bill have ever publicly confirmed they were together, although Kelis did tease that they were “both blessed, rich and happy” when directly questioned by fans on social media.

In response to the unlikely romance at the time, fans were left in shock over the surprise pairing, with many taking to Twitter to share their confusion.

Opting for a play on words with Kelis' music, one fan wrote: “Didn’t expect her milkshake to bring this boy to the yard.”

“Kelis caught a Ghostbuster,” joked another.
