Emmerdale viewers are convinced that a particularly heart-wrenching conversation between David Metcalfe (played by Matthew Wolfenden) and his elderly dad Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) was a foreboding glimpse at a tragic end in the former's exit plot.
The ITV soap is gearing up to say goodbye to David during Thursday night's instalment, and fans have mixed feelings about the character's departure from the village.
David has long been a fixture in the Yorkshire Dales, and has provided much comic relief and romantic drama with his various relationship difficulties.
But sadly, the character's latest storyline is a devastating one, as he's on his way out of the soap after discovering that both his stepson Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) and dad betrayed him with their secrets.
While David is struggling to wrap his head around Jacob's decision to embark on a relationship with his ex Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins), he came to his senses with his dad in the latest instalment.
The shopkeeper apologised to his dad after finding out he'd been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and promised him he'd be there for him during his treatment and deterioration.
But such promises come at a puzzling time, as Eric is set to remain in the village after David actor Matthew, who recently announced he'd split from his wife and fellow former Emmerdale star Charley Webb, exits from the soap.
"I have to try and focus on the future, Eric told his son, his voice wobbling in the difficult conversation."
"Moving forwards, you just take it easy, do the hours that you want and we'll cover the rest."
"It's going to be quite the journey, for both of us. And I can't tell you how good it feels to have you by my side," Eric added poignantly.
Fans now fear that David could have a tragic accident and die, as his decision to move away after such an important conversation with his dad makes little sense in context.
One person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Is David just gonna leave his dad to deal with the Parkinsons without him? Or is there a surprise death looming? #Emmerdale."
"Is David giving Eric false hope #Emmerdale," another fan guessed.
A third puzzled fan wrote: "David leaving the village when Eric is poorly makes no sense #Emmerdale."
While a fourth viewer predicted: "Oh great so it looks more than likely that David will leave for London which is where his daughter is the one he kidnapped as well !!! #Emmerdale."
As fans wait for the culmination in David's storyline on Emmerdale, Victoria decided she couldn't break any more hearts after a confrontation with David and broke things off with Jacob.
As the university student begged her to reconsider and couldn't stop crying at her door, Victoria insisted that it was too important for Jacob and David to try and repair their father-son bond, especially after losing her own parents.
Emmerdale continues weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV
