Emmerdale airs shock exit as guilty character flees the village after sudden death | The Sun

EMMERDALE fans were shocked to witness a guilty character exiting the soap as he fled the village after a sudden death.

Vicar Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) packed his bags to leave the Dales after struggling emotionally with his father's death.

His criminal dad Victor Anderson was found dead in the local church in a heart-breaking scene after having the cops called on him for stealing.

Before his shocking death Victor had recently been released from jail after serving time for a robbery gone wrong.

The convict attempted to reconnect with his family and managed to rekindle a romance with his estranged wife Claudette (Flo Wilson).

But just as things seemed to be looking up for Victor, he was accused of stealing Manpreet Sharma's (Rebecca Sarker) family heirloom.

When his wife found the necklace in his coat pocket he fled the scene.

By the time police found him he had died from an aneurysm.

However, Charles later made the bombshell revelation that it was him who planted the necklace on his dad.

The vicar confessed his part in the setup to Manpreet, saying: "I had to get him away from us. He had his claws into mum again.

"He was ruining our relationship. I thought if you caught him with the necklace, you’d kick him out."

Unable to deal with the guilt of causing his dad's death, Charles decided to run away to a wellness retreat in recent scenes.

He was meant to be writing a eulogy for Victor's funeral, but was overwhelmed by the role he played in the tragedy.

Before exiting the soap Charles told his mum Claudette: "Sorry I know it’s short notice but there’s been a cancellation at a retreat and I want to get my train connection, taking some time for my thoughts. Manpreet will be back tomorrow, so you won’t be on your own for too long."

She reassured him saying: "I’m quite happy on my own, you know. Sounds like your mind’s made up."

He agreed: "I know. It won’t be for long, only for a few days, I promise. I could take some time to think about dad, write the eulogy, get some sea air, no mobiles allowed. I really thought that’s what you meant."
