Shetland newcomer Ashley Jensen addresses future on BBC series

Ashley Jensen ‘teases’ future series of Shetland

Ashley Jensen has teased the future of BBC series Shetland ahead of her debut as DI Ruth Calder.

The 54-year-old appeared on Wednesday’s episode of This Morning with hosts Rylan Clark and Josie Gibson and spilled the tea on what viewers can expect.

Josie, 38, asked: “Do you have a taste for Ruth then? What can we expect from series nine?”

Rylan, 35, pointed out that Douglas Henshall played detective inspector Jimmy Perez for seven series before departing the show.

Ashley responded: “Well he did, didn’t he? Well, that’s entirely up to the people and the audience, if they watch it and like it.”

“Would you, if ever it was offered?” Rylan asked.

Teasing her future on the series, the actress said: “Absolutely, listen I’ve got puffins to see up there and otters, I didn’t see anything.

“Everybody talked about this wildlife and every time it went cut and the cameras stopped rolling, everybody would literally be going, ‘Apparently there are otters in the sea today’, but I never saw anything.”

Although she didn’t see any wildlife while shooting for the hit series in Scotland, Ashley admitted she did see a skeleton of a Puffin.

Ashley makes her debut on the show in the first season of episode eight as she takes over from Douglas as the new lead detective on the series.

The show features a group of detectives who investigate crime within the close-knit island community.

DI Ruth Calder has been described as a native Shetlander who returns to the Isles after living in London for 20 years.

In a first-look clip released ahead of the new season, it appears the locals aren’t so welcoming to Ruth as she makes her return.

The first season aired in March 2013 and has become a hit with viewers who have been eagerly awaiting the next series.

As well as Ashley, the show also stars Alison O’Donnell, Steven Robertson, Mark Bonnar, and Julie Graham in leading roles.

Shetland season eight begins tonight at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer
