Lily Allens Pillowman performance disrupted after emergency theatre evacuation

Lily Allen recalls the time when she lost her virginity

Lily Allen was mid-way through one of her acclaimed shows as Katurian in the Pillowman when she was hurried off stage following an emergency evacuation at the theatre.

The stunned star was herded outside, along with the cast, crew and all audience members, as a fire engine rushed to the scene outside the Duke of York Theatre in London.

Large crowds were forced to line the pavements on St Martin’s Lane, while they waited for news on the crisis – as the London fire brigade rushed to the scene.

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm sounding at a theatre on St Martin’s Lane in Central London.

“The theatre was evacuated as a precaution. A crew attended and following investigation, established there was no fire.

“The Brigade was called at 15.11 and the incident was over for firefighters by 15.24. A fire engine from Lambeth Fire Station attended the scene.”

The show may have momentarily been halted but Lily and the team soon got the show up and running again.

Audience members were able to go back inside, although some took to Twitter (X) to complain that “the spell had been broken”.

This isn’t the first time that Lily has been involved in an emergency during her time as Katurian, with the 38-year-old also halting one of the recent shows after she noticed an audience member had collapsed.

When she spotted the problem, she called for help and the woman was escorted out of the theatre to seek medical assistance.

Meanwhile, Lily’s onscreen antics have been equally dramatic, with her latest role following on from her gig as Jenny in 2:22 A Ghost Story last year.

The Pillowman’s website describes the show as “the first major revival of Martin McDonagh’s electrifying and savagely funny Olivier award-winning play”.

It goes on to explain: “In a totalitarian state, a writer is questioned by the authorities about a spate of murders that bear similarities to her short stories. Is this life imitating art or something more sinister?

“This black comedy, widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years, examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price do we pay for freedom of expression?”

Lily previously admitted in the Radio Times to relishing breaking up with boyfriends due to the inspiration it gave her for writing songs – and now she has revealed that she relates to her “artist and writer” character in the Pillowman.

When she took to This Morning to discuss it, she praised the way Katurian “pushes boundaries” and teased of the play: “There’s a bit of violence in it.”

Her run in the show is due to end at the start of September, which will give the star an opportunity to be reunited with her New York-based daughters – 11-year-old Ethel and 10-year-old Marnie – whom she recently revealed she hadn’t spoken to in “weeks”.
