I’m a size 10 but was body shamed in a shop for asking for a bigger size – their response was shockingly rude | The Sun

A SIZE 10 woman was left close to tears after a shop assistant deemed her “plus-size” and refused to help her.

Yassie Marie was told the store “doesn’t stock plus-size items” when she inquired about getting a larger pair of the high-waisted trousers she was trying on.

The mum, who gave birth nine months ago, says she was “humbled really quickly” and darted out of the shop “as fast as humanly possible” following the cruel comment.

Yassie flits between size 10 and 12, depending on the store.

The incident happened at one of Australian fashion brand Kookai’s shops, which also has a number of outlets in London.

She says the whole ordeal left her “feeling terrible” and called on fashion brands to be more inclusive with their sizing.

“I don’t shop at Kookai very often, but over the years, their customer service has been consistently subpar,” Yassie told 7Life.

“However, this time, it was shockingly rude, and I felt blatantly ignored.

“The comment made me feel awful.

“I felt like I was being treated as less than human just because I’m not a supermodel.”

In the UK and Australia, the average woman wears a size 16, according to research by lingerie brand Bluebella.

Yassie, who doesn’t consider herself to be plus-size, has been struggling with the changes to her body after giving birth at the start of this year.

“So this was one of the few times in over a year that I felt good enough to try on new clothes and actually enjoy it,” she said.

“I was ready to spend money, as I genuinely love Kookai’s designs and style.

“Instead, that interaction left me feeling terrible, and I had to hold back tears.”

The mum-of-one took to TikTok to vent her frustration in a video that has since garnered nearly one million views.

Kookai reached out to her to explain the situation was “not the customer experience” the store “upholds their staff to.”

The clothing brand asked Yassie to provide more details about the incident but she has decided not to.

“I just don’t see much point, I guess,” she said.

“I don’t think they’re going to change their sizing for having a chat with me.

“Even the term ‘plus size’ implies being larger than something. Larger than what?

“If the average is size 14 with a one-size leeway, then plus-size should start at size 18, at the very least.

“I am shocked at how many average-size women can’t find clothes that fit.

“I think that’s crazy.”

Kookai’s press team in Australia told 7Life: ”We contacted the customer directly, hoping to understand more about her experience.
